Beneath Cappadocia's crumbling surface, a marvel of equally gargantuan proportions lay hidden away for centuries; a subterranean city that could conceal the whereabouts of up to 20,000 inhabitants for months at a time.
The ancient city of Elengubu, known today as Derinkuyu, burrows more than 85m below the Earth's surface, encompassing 18 levels of tunnels. The largest excavated underground city in the world, it was in near-constant use for thousands of years, changing hands from the Phrygians to the Persians to the Christians of the Byzantine Era. It was finally abandoned in the 1920s by the Cappadocian Greeks when they faced defeat during the Greco-Turkish war and fled abruptly en masse to Greece. Not only do its cave-like rooms stretch on for hundreds of miles, but it's thought the more than 200 small, separate underground cities that have also been discovered in the region may be connected to these tunnels, creating a massive subterranean network.

Very good tour of 3 hours duration. The guide told us the history of the place and the formation of the caves, very interesting. The underground city very impressive. Then we went to places with good panoramic views and to a jewelry store, everything was very beautiful. I totally recommend the tour!

We had a wonderful time on this short tour at the underground city of Derinkuyu thanks to our guide Volkan! On the way we stoped for some breathtaking panoramas and some shopping (jewelery and spice market).
We chose the short tour so that we colud also have some free time that day, to visit the Open air museum in Goreme. Volkan gave us some tips and useful informations about that visit too.
It was perfect for us!

Our tour guide Volkan was very knowledgeable and a lovely personality. We enjoyed his company very much. We ended being the only people on the tour that day, so it worked out well. Derinkuyu is incredible and learning about the history behind it made it so much more mystical.

My husband and I recently took this tour. It ended up being just the two of us with a guide and a driver. The tour was great and we were so happy to have booked it. We learned a lot about the region and the underground cities. Highly recommend.

The trip was amazing, thanks to agency and the driver.
He gave us very good deal as well.
We found out that he was giving the cheapest hot air balloon ride@ 200/- euro per person, when everyone else was asking min 250/- euros.
I highly recommend to book a trip through him

Volcan is an excellent guide and gave us many details for cappadokia before even booking ! We had an incredible time riding ATV and seen sunset through all the main valleys ! We stopped for photos in different places and finally watched sunset at red valley !
