I have written a separate review of our cruise (Heritage Binh Chuan - 2d/1n). This is a review of Ha Long itself.
This is a stunning place to go - no doubt. The scenery is just breathtaking! I am so grateful we were able to go just after Vietnam opened to tourists as there was barely another boat around. I honestly couldn't imagine how spoiled this area would be if all the boats we saw sitting empty in the harbour were out sailing.
While the scenery is gorgeous, this is not somewhere you'll want to swim as there is quite a bit of garbage in the water. And given the number of boats as well as all the development around the coast of Ha Long, I can't see this getting any better.
If you're planning on visiting - don't wait much longer. Soon the masses will be back and the serenity and beauty we were so privileged to enjoy won't be here much longer.

We were on one of Calypso's cruise ships on a 2 day 1 night cruise. The ships have around 17 rooms and our room had a king size bed and a full spacious bathroom (with a shower not tub). They picked us up from the pier in their power boat and in less than 10 minutes we arrived at the cruise ship. we were welcomed by the crew and lead to the dinning room where they introduced us to the staff and advised of the program. We were checked into our rooms and were to come back for lunch. We returned to a very nice multi course lunch and afterwards had a little time to explore the decks and take in the amazing view of the bay. Afterwards we travelled to a inlet where we had a choice to row into caves on kayaks or take a bamboo boat which took us into one cave. on this side trip we saw more beautiful peaks of the lush Karsts we also saw monkeys. We returned to the larger ship and relaxed on the deck a little before a cooking lesson with the chef. had drinks and then headed for a multi course dinner. Very delicious vietnamese food. Next we had the option to go squid fishing which we tried and had lots of fun with our tour guide Tommy who showed us the ropes. Next there was Kareoke and others went back to their room. The next morning there was a lovely buffet breakfast and then we were taken to the island to visit the Hospital cave. this was a hospital that was built in a cave and used during the war. A sad reminder of the difficult times for the gentle people of Vietnam. upon our return we had a buffet lunch and headed back to the pier. I highly recommend this tour the beauty of the karats the emerald green water are amazing. There are many other boats on the water but they don't take away from the natural beauty. There are many boats that do these cruises with different prices. When booing your tour as about the age and size of the boat. we found tours ranged from $75 to $150 US. The boats cannot be more than 20 yrs old, ours was 11 and in great condition. Hopefully this will help you decide what works for you.

Amazing place, and beautiful weather made it all the better. Sunsets, sunrise and walking the caves. Swim in the water, do a canoe into the lagoon through a cave. Kayak if you are up to it, all adds to the experience in Vietnam. feed the moneys as you float int he lagoon. A definite must see while in Vietnam.

The must go place during Vietnam visit. There are too many options are available to explore the area. The more you pay the more you enjoy. If you love adventure then go for wooden boat, if you are visiting with family then try to choose at least two days and one night trip with minimum three star cruise ship. Two nights package will cover most of the three bays. If you are running out of time then go for day trip but that will not give you the complete experience of Ha Long bay.
Choose your cruise care fully. Try to take new cruise ship. The reasons are room amenities, ship conditions, decorations and updated services. We booked our tour via hotel. We stayed at Lakeside Palace Hotel. The front desk lady Lily help us a lot to understand the different services provided by the different cruise company. She recommend us to take La Pandora. The ship just launched near about a month ago. Some other cruise companies like Signature, Paradise and Indochina junk are also recommended.

Stunning was my first impression as we sailed out on Paradise elegance. the boat was beautiful and our room amazing.
Soon learn that there is a mass sailing out to the bay with lots of ships but after stopping for the main shore visits with the mass of tourists, the boat found its own spot to dock and watch the sunset - and then a massive storm came and watching the lightning was spectacular.
It’s quite a drive from Hanoi but is worth it. A site haven’t witnessed before in all our travels. As others have said it is quite polluted which is a real shame but the wonders of the islets is still impressive.
