Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) gained worldwide fame when he crossed the Pacific Ocean on the balsawood raft Kon-Tiki in 1947. He followed this up with spectacular expeditions on the reed boats Ra and Tigris. At the Kon-Tiki Museum guests can see original vessels and up-to-date exhibits on Heyerdahl’s expeditions, including Kon-Tiki, Ra, Tigris, Easter Island, Fatu-Hiva, Tùcume, Galapagos, a 30-metre cave tour, an underwater exhibit with a 10-metre model of a whale shark, Thor Heyerdahl’s library, Thor Heyerdahl in person, and Tiki pop culture.

It’s a cool museum about Thor Heyerdahl’s expeditions on Kon-Tiki and Ra. Very touching story of Thor and his team. There are models of raft and ship and a lot of information about journeys.
There are two movies about Thor’s expedition - one is 1 hour, length of another one is 10min, it’s a short copy of the whole movie. I really advise you to find a time for a full one - it’s very interesting story filmed on the raft during the expedition.
There are also museum passes for 2 or 3 museums (Fram, Kon-Tiki, Maritime Museum) with a reduced price.
ROAD: you can reach the museum by ferry or by bus.

We did this with the Oslo Pass. Raft is impressively large but you can’t walk on it as you can the Fram ship. Liked the way they did the kids labels - amusing compared to the adults ones.

Enjoyed the story and appreciated being able to see the rafts in person. Felt like there could have been more shown from Thor’s life. But great exhibition nonetheless

The museum was partially under construction. The 2 rafts were dusty. They are poorly presented, but it is an excellent place to understand the somewhat original rationale of these 3 expeditions.

Having just read the book, seeing the actual boat was an emotional experience. It actually a little bigger than I had imagined from the pictures in the book. The museum also features a boat and artifacts/information on the Ra Expeditions. There were lots of photos and data on the explorers that accompanied Mr. Heyerdahl completing the story.

The museum is small but easy to follow a logical route round, which is incredibly inspiring about human endeavour to find and discover more about human migration from ancient cultures round the world, even when many thought the journey wasn't possible. The museum explains the undertaking by a small group of men set to prove that it was possible that ancient civilisations could transit the vast pacific and Atlantic oceans on a raft, made from using traditional methods and materials.

It does this in sequence as you walk round: start of an idea, the formulation, funding, crew backgrounds, the challenges of the oceanic journey, international reception, ancient cultures and relevance today. Text is provided in English and Norwegian and other languages too. Displays feature information boards, glass cases with objects inside, realistic dioramas (ancient cave with wall drawings), tv. screens, projections and life-size rafts of the expeditions. It has it all. This made it engaging and educational. I learnt a lot from the experience. In total I think I spent about 90 minutes here reading as I went round - again it is only a small museum, but an engaging one at that.

There is a shop as well with quite a lot on offer besides the usual trinkets, including environmental and sustainable goods, and is clearly worth a good browse through.

Museum is interesting, but quite small. Be aware, that if you are going there with children, there is some sort of a cave underneath Kon-Tiki raft and there was some scary noise, when we entered it, so my child was scared and started crying.

Easy bus ride to the venue, it was snowing so more interesting. Had pre paid via trip advisor so getting in was simple, lady at reception was ready. The museum itself was great, big enough for the contents and many artefacts to give greater detail, a good half day out

Fantastic to see this raft as well ad Ra on display.

These guys were adventurous souls for sure.

You gotta think maybe a little crazy as well.

Really, depending on flying fish to land on raft as a food source is nuts.

Well done exhibit.
