In the Shadow of the Mountain (2-hour tour) takes you through the Plateau neighborhood and traces the roots of Montreal’s Jewish community through early 20th century Yiddish and then English literature. By way of poetry and novels, this tour explores how Jews envisioned their life in Montreal and contrasts these utopic visions to the realities of life in the city. You’ll also discover the ways in which Montreal's Jewish community made the Plateau their home at the foot of the mountain, and made a lasting impression on its landscape.

Great tour. Guide was extremely knowledgeable, and gave us a fascinating view of Jewish History in Montreal. I would highly recommend this tour. Knowledge and some exercise all in one package. I would definitely take this tour again.

Avery did a super job of pointing out historical spots and providing just the right amount of detail to keep things interesting and fun. Highly recommend this tour. The others look good, too.

What an excellent experience! Avery was our guide. She was so well informed, patient, flexible, and entertaining too. We walked a lot and got a wonderfully detailed sense of the “downtowners” and a slice of jewish Montreal history. Fascinating stories! Overlapping experiences! I loved how Avery gave us so many details as well as the bigger contexts (WWII, labor movements, crime in the city) and used maps and photos. I would give this 6 stars if possible! Attached photo — we saw this in the window of a shuttered storefront right after the tour ended — and we knew the whole context and backstory. Felt so informed!!!

My husband and I really enjoyed the 90 minute "In the Shadow of the Mountain tour". Our guide Lara was very knowledgeable and personable. The pace of the tour was perfect: she provided lots of engaging anecdotes and information, but we still had ample time for questions and photos. It is a great way to explore a fascinating corner of Montreal. We look forward to trying other tours with this museum in the future.

My daughter and I loved our tour. We've been coming to Montreal for years and thought we knew Montreal Jewish history (my husband's family came to the city in the 1950s). We learned so much -- familiar streets and buildings now have added resonance for us. Our young tour guide was very knowledgable and engaging. We're looking forward to doing the tour of Mile End next time. Also: don't miss Fletcher's cafe in the museum building. The food is delicious and remarkably inexpensive for the quality!

Simone gave us a wonderfully interesting and engaging tour that highlighted not only the general history of Jewish life and culture in Montreal, but included some beautiful passages of poetry and surprising political facts. We stood in front of the homes of legends (like Leonard Cohen) and controversial figures (like Fred Rose). Best thing we’ve done in our several visits to Montreal.

What a wonderful time being introduced to Jewish Montreal.! Sarah is a very informed guide who took our small group on a leisurely walk, stopping by historic buildings and homes of famous Jewish poets and politicians. We enjoyed her stories and reminiscences of the others on the tour very much. Strongly recommend this adventure.

An excellent panoramic tour of formative historical, cultural and literary Jewish influences in the Plateau neighborhood, featuring notable landmarks from late 19th and early 20th century Montreal. A rewarding afternoon, with a charming and knowledgeable guide.
