We really enjoyed this! Our driver Ubie (not sure if I have spelled that correctly) picked us up from our hotel in Seminyak at 7:30am and took us on the long drive up to the North Bali area. Only 60-odd kms but it took about 2 hours due to the sheer amount of traffic on the roads (and it gets pretty twisty once you get up into the hills).

Once we arrived we met Eddie, our guide for the day. He explained that we'd be doing pedal-paddle-peak rather than peak-paddle-pedal, for reasons that were soon made quite obvious. The first cycling part was practically all downhill, and we're talking some extremely steep declines where we were on the brakes a lot. It would have been extremely difficult to cycle up those hills! After we got to the bottom we continued on the bikes through a lush rainforest (the off-road tyres on the bikes came in handy here) before making our way past a couple of temples and to Tamblingan lake.

From there we paddled across the lake (sore arms by the end!) for a quick look at another temple, before starting our trek back up through a different part of the rainforest. Eddie pointed out different plants and trees and happily answered all of our questions as we wandered through a pristine setting, only interrupted by a few other tour groups coming past the other way. After about an hour of walking around on fairly level ground we finally started the last part of the hike, which was pretty much just going up to get back to near where we started. We emerged back onto a main road right near a restaurant where we thankfully were able to sit down and rest and had a delicious meal of chicken and rice.

After lunch Ubie drove us all to the nearby waterfall where we spent 15 minutes or so taking pictures (beautiful setting), before dropping off Eddie and driving back to Seminyak. A wonderful day out seeing a different part of Bali.

Things to note:

- Wear comfortable shoes. Cycling and paddling parts were pretty easy but hiking up the hill was challenging in parts. There are guide ropes/structures in certain places to help but you don't want to do this in sandals/thongs.
- Eat a decent breakfast beforehand, or take a snack. We got picked up at 7:30am and ate lunch at around 1pm (Eddie got us some fruit from a local seller which we ate mid-morning). You will be hungry (and sweating) by the time you finish the uphill part of the walk.
- Wear sunscreen and take some water. You'll be in the shade for quite a decent part going through the rainforest areas, but you'll still see a lot of sun during the day. Eddie gave us a 600ml bottle of water each, but we went through those plus another 1L bottle between us.
- Take a little cash with you. Lunch is included - and really tasty - but drinks were extra. We bought two cokes to have with lunch which was $IDR 20,000 ($AU 2.00). Also it might be nice to tip the canoe pilot/Ubie/Eddie a little something for their work over the day.
- Be prepared for a long day. 2 hours in the car to get there, 6 hours of activity + lunch, 2 hours to get back to the hotel (if you are staying in Seminyak). You won't be getting back until 5pm or so.
