Nyungwe is located in the southwest, covering an area of 1016 km across the majestic hills of southeast Rwanda, Nyungwe National Park is the largest mountainous rain forest in central and east Africa and one of the most ancient, dating back to before the Ice Age. The forest supports over 1025 plant species and over 500 species of orchid and giant lobelia. Nyungwe also has 13 species of primates; these include chimpanzees and the Black and White Angolan colobus monkeys. It is also home to habituated species such as the Mangabeys and the Blue Monkeys. Nyungwe forest has its own Canopy. And it’s the only canopy in East Africa.

This experience was amazing! I would specifically ask for Darius as a guide —— great guy. The walk through the treetops was exhilarating and the hike was just the right length.

This trip was well organised, the bridges well constructed. The walk back is up hill but the walk on top of the rain forest made all the physical exertion worth is.

Incredible experience. The beauty of this national park is impressive. The canopy itself is only part of the attraction. Surrounded by monkeys and mountains - this is a great experience.

This day trip was exactly what I had wanted to do since the National Park had recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Darius delivered. He picked me up early that morning as agreed, made the long drive in the rain with competence and cheerfulness. He even knew to remind me to order a box breakfast from my hotel that I didn’t even know they could provide! He is very knowledgeable, a good communicator and is a real pleasure to travel with. The hike at the park was great and he made sure I had the right gear and documentation for the park. It was a long day for him, but he was incredibly upbeat and kind. He paced bathroom breaks and stops well too. Nothing but great things to say about this trip and my experience.

I did a tour from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda with Usalama Tours, which I chose after reading some nice comments and reviews from previous customers. It was a great decision, as the tour was great and everything went smoothly. All details were arranged by whatsapp messages and e-mail, which they were always very quick to respond. They sent me all the information and the payment details with very clear instructions and I paid in an MTN office in Kigali as instructed.
On the arranged day Darius showed up at our hotel on time to pick us up and take us to the National Park. Darius is very nice and we had interesting and funny conversations during our long ride to the Park. He also made sure the ride goes according to plan and he also tried to accomodate all our requests. The tour of the National Park, especially the canopy walk are really worthwhile.
I truly recommend you use Usalama Tours on your next trip to Rwanda!

A great choice for someone who may feel overwhelmed by planning and logistics. Darius had it all figured out! I’m sure a DIY plan of this would have been more budget friendly, but I had a lot on my plate and it was so nice to have someone else figured out all the logistics.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
-Darius will be in great communication with you via WhatsApp
-He is very flexible regarding pick up, I changed my pick up location last minute and he was very accommodating
-He’ll pick you up at 5 am. I recommend sitting in the front seat as the road is very curvy and this might help with car sickness
-I slept the ride up (bring a pillow!). The drive is about 4 hours
-When you get there, he’ll arrange for a guide to take you into the forest. It is about 1 hour to 1.5 hours of walk. Very beautiful, and the canopy is great. They recommend rain coats and rain boats
-Lunch at the restaurant is included
-Drive back — about 4.5 hours for us because there was traffic.

Would highly recommend Usulama! Darius took us to the canopy walk. He was extremely polite, informative and fun! We had the opportunity to jam the whole way back to music. While we were not able to see some of the sites due to rain it was still an awesome trip. Would love to use Usulama on my next trip to Rwanda and would certainly recommend Darius and Usulama to others.

Baboons, mountain monkeys and rare birds were some of the sightings on the Canopy Walk in Nyungwe. Wonderful to see this Rwanda gem. Great guide. Remember: a recent covid test, good hiking shoes, bug spray and rain gear (it is a rain forest). I had a wonderful and informative driver who was very knowledgeable about the area and the animals. They adjusted the tour around my flight schedule, which was appreciated. It is a 5 hour drive from Kigali.
