This a Jewish Heritage walking tour in Thessaloniki's city centre, where the main Jewish community used to live and work for centuries.
Although not much of the old buildings is nowadays preserved, due to the terrible fire of 1917 and the World War II distructions, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki opens the main sites related to the Jewish Heritage.
This tour can be done in the mornings only, when the sites are open until 14.00 - not on Saturdays.

A longer tour can also be arranged upon request by private transportation to see the east-side of the city with the old Jewish villas of the early 20th century, the new Jewish cemetery on the west-end and also the old railway station, known for the Holocaust deportation of 50.000 Jews by the Nazis by trains.
Visits to the Jewish Museum and the synagogue request a pre-booking by your guide, with full name, passport and nationality details to be sent in advance.

Wow! What can I say? Efi was an amazing guide. We were a party of 6 , visiting Thessaloniki for 2 days and all interested in the rich history of the Jewish people who were once the majority in Thessaloniki. The tour began at the Holocaust memorial, commemorating the 50,000 Jews from Thessaloniki who perished in the Holocaust. Efi took us through the streets, sharing her incredible knowledge, insights, stories and tales. Her warm and engaging manner, coupled with the detailed information she shared, made for an amazing few hours. The synagogues and Jewish museum were closed that day. Efi had advised us of that when we pre booked the tour, as it was a special day - an annual Never Again march (and speeches) commemorating the day the first train left Thessaonkibto Aushwitz. Our tour finished in time to join the march. At the end of the tour, Efi gave us a book she had written and I can’t wait to read it. We have booked many tours on our many travels and Efi was amongst the very best tour guides! I would give her ten stars!

Efi took us on a Jewish tour of Thessaloniki and was an excellent and extremely knowledgeable guide. We got to both see the sights and learn about the rich history of the Jews in Thessaloniki and their fate in the second world war as well as modern Jewry in Thessaloniki (including a trip through the market!). She was considerate about the weather and pace. We highly recommend Efi as a tour guided and this particular tour.

After reading some rave reviews of Efi, we were fortunate enough to book her directly for a day long tour of Thessaloniki and the Royal Tombs of Vergina with our two 16 year old granddaughters. We specifically contacted Efi after reading reviews about her expertise relating to the Jewish Heritage of Thessaloniki. We were not disappointed and came away with a great deal of knowledge about a part of history that is unfortunately little known by most people. As a native of this area, Efi was able to give us first hand insights about the history and culture of this region of Greece that is “off the beaten path” for most visitors to Greece. We concluded our day with a fascinating tour of the relatively recently discovered and opened Royal Tombs of Vergina, which is almost as amazing as the tomb of King Tut in Egypt. Our group of 5 had an excellent tour. Efi was very knowledgeable, friendly, and a great tour guide. We did the 4 hour Jewish walking tour and for a small fee we added on an extra hour of general Thessaloniki historical sights.
At the end of the tour we realized that there were a few pictures in one of the synagogues that we had not taken and asked Efi if she could take them the next time she was there and send them to us which she did.
I highly recommend both the tour and Efi.

Efi, my tour guide, made the history of the Jews of Thessalonika come alive.
I appreciated the depth of her knowledge as she explained the importance of each site and of each monument that we visited, especially the Memorial to the Holocaust.
As a daughter of Holocaust survivors, it was important for me to hear about the impact of
the Holocaust on the Jews of Salonika. Efi enriched my understanding of those who perished, of those who fought in the Resistance and of those survivors who returned.
I enjoyed visiting the old and
new synagogues, as well as experiencing the Renaissance of the old Jewish quarter in the form of the modern mall complex of Modiani.

I went on a private guided Jewish Heritage Tour of Thessalonika today.
My private guide, Efi, was not only a wealth of knowledge, but she was able to show me a kaleidoscope of the long history of the Jews of Salonika.
She was very patient and inspirational as she explained the history of her people. (I could never have learned all
that she was able to share with me from a book.) As we visited each site and each monument, she .made the history of thdeJews of Thessalonika come alive.
I highly recommend Efi for her expertise
and for having madde my visit to Thessaloniks that much richer.
