Private Tour to the Mud Volcano

Visiting the mud volcano in Cartagena, known as El Totumo, was an unforgettable experience for us. Sinking into the warm, therapeutic mud felt incredibly relaxing and fun. The sensation of floating effortlessly in the buoyant mud was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. After the mud bath, rinsing off in the nearby lagoon was refreshing and invigorating. The friendly local guides made the experience even more enjoyable with their helpfulness and good humor. Despite the rustic setting, the adventure at El Totumo was one of the highlights of my trip to Cartagena, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and delightful experience.

The guide Gilberto was on time at our hotel for pick up and drove us to the mud volcano while giving a brief of what to expect and how much to tip for the additional services. The optional services includes carrying bags, taking pictures, massages and bath after the experience. Highly encourage to take this trip early in the morning to avoid the crowd and spend more time in the mud pool.

My family and I are visiting Colombia from NYC, and we had an AMAZING time visiting the Totumo Mud Volcano. Our tour guide’s name was Gina Ospino, and we had a lovely driver, Carlos Morales. Gina did such a wonderful job , she explained Colombia’s history, and the significance of the volcano . She explained what to expect when we arrived at the volcano , and accompanied us the entire time .

When we arrived at the volcano, we were able to leave all our belongings in the van with Carlos , and workers at the volcano carried our spare clothes and towels , and also took pictures of us the entire time with our personal phone.

The Volcano was fantastic! It was relaxing and safe, there are also additional workers who help you in and out of the volcano, and will give you a massage while being in the volcano.

After you are finished in the mud bath , you are accompanied by Gina , and the workers who are taking pictures and carrying your belongings to the lake. At the lake there are women there to help clean you off . The entire experience is wonderful!

After you have cleaned off you are able to enjoy a small lunch of either arepas, empanadas , and/or a traditional food made from yuca with cheese.

I HIGHLY recommend both Gina and Carlos to accompany you on this great excursion!

The whole trip was very organized, there was no delay or poor planning. The guide and people working there were all very kind and patient. The experience itself was also very enjoyable, relaxing, and unique. I’d recommend to bring towels and especially cash to tip the locals working there.

We loved this experience! We selected the 6:30am time which I highly recommend because we had the place to ourselves. The mud pit is rather small so you may want to avoid going midday when more crowded.

We also opted to have the women at the lagoon bathe us which I also recommend because the shower area is very modest. Overall you do feel very immersed in nature and it's beautiful.

Juan and Natalia are amazing!!! I cannot put into words how safe we felt, informed, and entertained. Not only did they keep our belongings safe, they stayed by our side the entire time. Natalia also gave us recommendations for the Rosario Islands the next day and we followed her itinerary exactly… best day!!!!!

15/10 stars to Juan and Natalia!!!!!!

Amazing experience! We arrived early in the morning and had the mud pit to ourselves. The view from the volcano was gorgeous and all staff were incredible. They took care of us and took so many good pictures. Gilberto was an incredible tour guide.

My friends and I wanted to try the Mud Volcano, and I’m glad we chose this company. We went at 7 AM, so we won’t be crowded. The ladies did a great job washing the mud off of us. Good experience!

I’m glad I took the advice of other travelers and booked this *private* group excursion!

Our guide was Gilberto. He was friendly, personable, and informed. He easily entertained our group of five about a variety of topics, including new communities for U.S. ex-pats, Colombian history & figures, and native birds!

With an early start, we were able to privately enjoy the mud volcano and avoid waiting in line on an uneven stair structure before 40+ other visitors arrived. The mud is so dense that you float! Attempts to stand upright were futile, yet fun. The lagoon adjacent to the mud volcano is breathtakingly beautiful.

This activity satisfied our group’s desires for nature and adventure/something extraordinary. We were also lucky enough to visit “Salinas de Galerazamba” nearby. The water wasn’t pink, like it is during other times of the year, but we enjoyed our visit, nonetheless.
