Situated within the Gold Reef City complex, the Apartheid Museum takes visitors into the dark heart of South Africa’s past.

Opened in 2001, this one-of-a-kind museum documents the rise and fall of Apartheid. Exhibits including film footage, photographs and artefacts take visitors on a dramatic and emotionally charged journey from devastating racial segregation to the liberation of the oppressed.

Discover how South Africa has shed the tyranny of its past and created a future as bright as the African sun itself.

The guide Mwabisi, or Mo as he asked us to call him, was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed the tour and highly recommend him.

Our guide Tsholo informed us about the total history of South Africa, which was great, because than you understand more about how things could happen in the past.
The museum is amazing, great how it's been built up in a timetable, the variation in statues, written words and live views is fantastic. Keep your tissues within reach because nobody will walk out of this museum with dry eyes.

Benale met me at the airport, where I arranged a long layover to allow me to see the Apartheid Museum. He drove me there and guided me through the museum while explaining some historical things that were above and beyond what was mentioned at the museum itself. He was very personable and professional and knowledgeable. He also shared some information about Johannesburg on the drive from the airport and on the return. Highly recommend! You will learn a lot.

Tsholo, the guide was superb! His explanations were easy to understand and captured the historical and cultural perspectives that are critical for visitors to South Africa. His personal stories and experiences helped to educate us. He demonstrated an expertise in cultural tourism that international travellers need from local guides! He was also our guide on the Johannesburg and Soweto full day tour!

Visiting this museum was an incredible experience, revealing the depth and complexity of Apartheid in South Africa. It goes into incredible detail to reveal the history leading up to and the causes of Apartheid, but then also immerses visitors into the experience with interactive and video exhibits. Booking with Stephenson Adventures was a great choice, the service from Tsholo was incredibly high quality and professional. I would highly recommend this to anyone considering it.

I drove with Mo. He was excellent. Good driver, very careful and very knowledgeable on Johannesburg history, especially Sueto and the history of apartide. We visited Sueto and the museums on apertide. It was an eye opener and made me as a Canadian understand wh an upheaval S Africa went through ridding its self of apartide.
Again thanks Mo, job well done

My guide was very knowledgable and patient to share plenty of information and answer my countless questions. I had time to roam by myself and also time to be guided. It was a great balance.

We visited the museum with a guide on the first day. We went back the next day on our own to go through everything again. What information! What stories. Fascinating and educational exhibition of a terrible period. Highly recommended for those who want to explore South Africa.

Mo was a fantastic and friendly tour guide. I was passing through town and wanted to see this museum, but didn't want to figure out transportation and timing on my own, especially as a jet-lagged solo female traveler. This tour was a really simple and fun way to visit the museum, while also have a great opportunity to learn about sights in Johannesburg along the way. Mo was also great in sharing stories and his perspective, which helped me see the city and museum through a local lens. I'd highly recommend this tour company and Mo, who made the experience a great way to start my South African adventure.
