Our guide, Karim, took a couple of minutes to learn everyone's names (took him less than 3 minutes to memorize who we all were and where we were from), then showed us a map of the Bordeaux region before we boarded his comfortable van. This gave us a good idea of how complex this wine region truly is. We headed out for Saint-Émilion's Château Bellevue (your specific vineyard will vary, but should be excellent regardless) as he gave us fascinating information on the history of wine around that village. Karim's relaxed and friendly style put us immediately at home, and made the ride pass quickly.

Upon arrival at the château, he took us to the vineyard and pointed out what can affect a wine's quality. We then saw the vats where wine is made, and the cave where the barrels are aged. We then stepped into the château itself for a tasting of four different wines from the family's several vineyards in the Saint-Émilion region. Karim, who had visited dozens of vineyards around Bordeaux, guided us through the different wines, including a chance to try two different years of the same wine and compare them. All were delicious, and members of the group each had their favorites. Of course, we had an opportunity to purchase bottles while there--later research in town revealed the discounts they offered were substantial--and then we reboarded the van for a visit to the village.

Arriving in Saint-Émilion proper, Karim gave us a brief overview of the village, indicated our meeting place, then sent us off to explore. We took his recommendation to visit the local church and monastery. We also tried local ice cream at Glacier des vignobles, and picked up some canelés and macarons at Mouliérac for later.

We gathered up at the appointed time, then walked back to the van for the ride home to Bordeaux. While it took about 45 minutes, Karim made it fly by with a fun game of guessing smells associated with wine tastes. All in all, a fascinating half-day of learning, delicious wine, and fun.
