Though the capital of Provence and France’s 2nd-largest city, Marseille proudly grooves to its own Mediterranean beat – a mash-up of big-city grit and small-town sociability mixed with seagull squawks and scooter engines. Bookended by limestone fjords and garrigue hills, this working-class metropolis is profoundly shaped by its seaside location and its deep ties to the rest of the Mediterranean. The port has welcomed waves of goods, immigrants, and ideas since 600 B.C. Briny, boisterous, gritty and gorgeous, Marseille is a cultural crossroads in constant flux. The latest evolution was sparked in 2013, when the city reigned as Europe’s Capital of Culture. Now, France’s least-known city is finally on the map. Let us be your guide with this food tour in Marseille.

Just a brilliant tour led by the wonderful Severine who took us to a variety of shops and eating places that I would never have found under my own steam. At the same time she told us so much about the city itself and its social and political makeup

Coco was spectacular! Not only did she know everyone in every little shop, but she brought us to so many delicious destinations that we left not only stuffed but also better educated about the culture and neighborhoods of Marseille. It was a perfect balance of walking, eating, and exploring. Highly recommend for families and/ or adult groups.

As with all Culinary Backstreets tours, this one was spectacular. Learned about the immigrant communities of Marseille that make the city what it is today. And their foods! Would never have experienced such a variety of foods without this tour. Loved the visits to the ethnic markets and bakeries too. Can not say enough good things about this tour and the others that Culinary Backstreets offers around the world.

Severine was a marvelous guide for our culinary tour to so many different amazing places. It was a bit rainy during part of our tour but she expertly pivoted and made the day seamless. I may go again when I’m back in Marseille next year!!

Our guide Coco was one of the best I've ever had, and took us to places in the city we would have never found on our own. She knows everyone, and knows all about the history and legends of the city. The tour is the perfect amount of walking and eating, with just the right amount of stops. The multiculturalism of Marseille makes it truly special. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic time with our guide Severine! She took us to wonderful places that we would never have experienced without her. We tried so many different kinds of food and got to explore beautiful neighborhoods. In addition to the excellent food we got to sample, we had an amazing time getting to know Severine. She is a lovely person and we enjoyed spending the day with her.

A delightful day strolling in the back streets of Marseille with our knowledgeable guide, sampling delicious dishes from the various cultures that make up the mosaic of this amazing city. Stopped for wine and lunch later on in a local fish restaurant we would never have discovered on our own. Highly recommended. A fabulous experience.

Fun event. Coco was a great guide. Food we ate was mediocre working class food. I enjoyed the shared experience.

I gladly dived into that multicultural stew with two delightful Canadians and a charming hostess Severine. We visited all sorts of interesting places which we would probably have never stumbled upon under our own steam and sampled lots of great food. We were also given an insight into the history of this fantastic city. Merci beaucoup!
