Porto is a picture-perfect city, its beauty easily captured in a single frame — monumental churches dressed in blue tiles line a steep street opening up onto a view over the Douro River to Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the river, where the city’s famed Port wine lodges and their iconic billboards dot the hill. Dig deeper into the backstreets and we find the complexities of city life and the culinary diversity that comes with it. On this full-day food tour, with at least ten tasting stops, we’ll start with the city’s favorite pastry, the éclair, and strong coffee before visiting a 3rd generation chocolate-maker. We’ll stop into a tavern for a quick petisco of smoked meat and whatever’s fresh and then visit a traditional cheese shop for a tasting. We’ll sample one of Porto’s famed sandwiches at a lunch counter crowded with locals and head to a neighborhood restaurant to taste the freshest fish and finish with a tasting Port wine and gooey cakes created in a Portuguese convent.

Carine was a wonderful tour guide. She was knowledgeable about Porto culinary history, interesting, and most of all had a great sense of humor. She created a camaraderie among her guests and shared her personal perspective on the food and culture of Porto. The places we went to sample the foods of Porto were iconic, charming, and interesting. From the first pastry to the port and cheese, soup, fish, Portuguese meats and “hot dogs”, everything was delicious and authentic. We would highly recommend this tour and Carine for a great 6 hour intro to Porto food.

We had a wonderful time with our guide, Bruno, who was totally knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. We spent significant time with him talking about the food, wine and culture and the community. Our only downside was the weather, which was rainy and blustery all day.

Extremely well informed and we saw a side of Porto we would never have seen without our great guide! The locations were very well chosen and having two lunches (!) a real treat.

We ended up having the tour to ourselves and the tour guide, Bruno, went above and beyond for us. It was one of the best things we did in Portugal. He made it personal and still all about Porto and the country.

A day with Carine is like a day with a friend showing you around where she lives. A must do on the first day in Porto.

We had a great time with our guide Bruno and had so much delicious food in places I wouldn't have found on my own. Also the group was rather small, so it definitely felt more like a day with friends then an ordinary tour.

The tour was outstanding, as was Marta. I don't eat pork, beef, or lamb and I still wanted to go everywhere no matter what, but Marta always found other things for me to taste (my husband eats everything so he tried everything everywhere). Marta revealed that Porto is a great food city, and she has all the qualities of an excellent guide: welcoming, smart, funny, passionate about her city and her country, and able to discuss topics other than food (politics, religion, history, etc.). I was already familiar with Culinary Backstreets and I will recommend it enthusiastically whenever I have the opportunity.
