Our day-long tour starts on the water, as we ride our own trajinera– a festively-decorated flat-bottom boat used by locals to traverse the canals – through part of the ecological reserve that is particularly rich in flora and fauna. As the boat glides through the canals that connect the chinampas, we’ll have an onboard family-style meal made using local ingredients and learn about the thousand-years-old local agricultural method that’s still used to feed nearby Mexico City today. Along the way, we’ll stop at a working chinampa to meet a local farmer and find out more about the distinctive local way of life and work.

Beyond awesome experience. We learned not only about the procesz of the chimampas, but also about the history of Mexico City before, during, after the Spanish conquest up to present day. in addtion, we went to a local mercado. We tasted and learned about a huge variety of foods. Would recommend that people not eat breakfast before going on the tour. The only disappointment was that I cannot help the chinampas to be resurrected from the modern day obstaclesthat they are facing. A beautiful and fragile environment exhibiting heroic resilience.

Victor was very passionate about his work! He was informative and engaging. He kept us curious and a little smarter by the end of our tour. It’s an excellent tour to make people aware of the importance of Xochimilco

We had a fantastic time. Very immersive and unique tour. You won't regret it. From the 9+ stops in the market to the boat tour of the canals, this was so much fun.

We had an absolutely amazing experience with our guide Liz. Her knowledge and guidance is what made the experience and we felt very glad that we had chosen this tour. She’s an amazing person who could tell you anything you wanted to know about CDMX and about so many other topics, the conversation flowed on and on. We would definitely do it or another Culinary Backstreets tour again and would recommend to anyone else looking for a truly special experience that allows you to immerse yourself in local food, culture, and history.

The tour was more than we expected. Victor, our guide, was very well versed in the history of Mexico City and Xochimilco. His enthusiam for the place was palpable, and we learned alot. He was an exceptional guide and made the trip.

The tour through the market in Xochimilco was fantastic, and the food was equally great. Following the market, we went to the canals, and what a great experience. We highly recommend this tour.

My 3rd Culinary Backstreets tour. Paco was fantastic. We ate things we otherwise would never, learned a lot, and then enjoyed the beauty and quiet of the Xochimilco canals. What a treasure they are!

I highly recommend this experience for those who want to deeply learn and ask questions about the chiampas. Victor, our guide, was so knowledgeable about everything relating to the area’s past and present. If you just want to eat and have mezcal on a party boat, this tour is not for you.

Well-conceived tour with knowledgeable guides who were fun to spend time with. Best part for me was the opportunity to explore the waterways and farmland of Xochimilco while avoiding tourist-oriented activities. It would be a logistic challenge to arrange a trip like this independently and I'm grateful to Liz, Nacho, and the whole Culinary Backstreet team for making it possible. One more thing: excellent pre-trip customer service!
