Our ranch might be small, but it makes a huge difference to many animals, who have previously suffered from abuse and/or neglect. Our horses (and ranch dogs) are our priority, and we will always put their well-being first. That is why we ask our guests to provide detailed information on their ages, heights, weight and levels of experience, as it is of extreme importance to us to make sure we have a suitable horse for you. (Max. weight permitted is 200lbs; max. BMI 30.)
Winner of multiple awards throughout the years (two-fold Winner of the Unique Experience of the Year by the Luxury Travel Guide, Winner of the Boutique Touroperator of the Year by the Luxury Travel Guide and the Travel & Hospitality Award Winner of Excellence in Service, to name a few), our guests can rest assured that they will be in good hands with our Rancho Baaxal Family.

This was a fantastic experience! Lisa was great. She went out of her way to make this tour special. She turned a horseback riding tour into an adventure. Our family made memories that will last a lifetime. I would definitely recommend this horseback riding tour!

Lisa was a wonderful guide and we loved hearing her stories and the history of the area. The horses were gentle and we felt very comfortable during the ride.

A great day at Rancho Baaxal with Lisa, a very hard working woman, enjoyed our time with the rescue dogs at the ranch before our guided trek through the jungle on horseback. Lisa pointed out some interesting Mayan ruins along the route before stopping at one and getting an interesting bit of history
This will be a highlight of our trip to Mexico and took away a couple of hand made souvenirs

Had a great experience riding today with Thim as my guide. The love, care and respect shown to the horses by Lisa and Thim was very evident. Thim was great company and very informative about the natural area throughout the ride through the jungle.
My horse Juguette was very polite, safe and well-behaved.
With the help of Google maps, my taxi driver knew exactly where to drop me.
Hopefully, I can make a return visit soon.

This excursion was fantastic! The ranch was easy to book with and the staff were kind and informative. The animals are all treated extremely well and taken care of properly. The place is full of rescued horses and dogs, and it is obvious how much care and affection the staff has for the animals. They match you to a horse based on size as well as riding experience, and told us a bit about the horses past and personality. The tour guide even helped us sort out confusion with our cab as we don’t speak spanish. This was the only ride I could find where the sole focus is on the trail riding experience. I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

My adventure horseback riding began well before I arrived. I've been worried about the location there being absolutely no address and how on Earth I would find it. Even with the instructions that were fairly thorough emailed to me, to assume that a taxi driver would know where it was.. well, I was just hoping this place was popular enough that the local cab drivers would know where it was. And they sure did not.

So with some anxiety and some frustration of the taxi driver as the pre-arranged payment in my mind went up with the guilt factor of their frustration, we finally got to the ranch. And down to business.

I was paired up with a horse named Brandy who I thought the entire time his name was Randy since Randy seems to be more of a male horse's name or a male anything's name I guess you could say. But anyways it turns out the horse's name was Brandy.

The tour guide gosh I forget his name sorry about that. Anyways the tour guide strongly insisted on mosquito repellent. I was kind of against that since I'm kind of freaked out by the chemicals in the mainstream brands, but fortunately he had some natural stuff and I agreed to put that on my ankles. Fortunately there were no bugs to speak of on our journey through the jungle.

It was a nice easy tide. Randy not brandy or I mean Brandy not Randy was a great horse I certainly can't complain about him. The trail was easy overall with a few parts that added a little bit of challenge but that's not such a bad thing since otherwise it would have been too boring. We ran across an old small Hut Mayan ruin thing that appeases the local nature spirits or something like that. I'll take that over tourist tacky Chechen itza any day frankly. Had great convo about ancient aliens and esoteric stuff and all that cool thing so really that was great too.

On a previous horse adventure in Mexico many years ago I got to gallop with the horse which I'd never done before. As with most horse riding for novices your horse basically just goes right behind the horse in front of it and you don't really do much. It was the case as well with this adventure. Although Brandy was a bit of a nipper apparently so I did have to keep him from going out the butt in front of him.

No galloping to speak of so I was a little bit bummed about that. But overall I'd say of the things I did on the Mayan Riviera the week I was there this was probably the best. And even better, instead of 700 pesos that I gave the taxi coming up to the ranch, I took a 30 peso autobus that picked me up right outside the ranch entrance. I'll take that as a win.

I scheduled my ride for the last day of my vacation. It was myself and two other guests on our ride. This place is by far the best run horseback riding tour that I have been to. You can 100% tell that they love and care for these animals. With all the horses being rescues, they vowed not to overwork their horses. They all look very healthy and happy. Throughout the ride, the guide chatted about all of the local vegetation, and animals we saw along the way. We stopped at an ancient Mayan ruin on the property, as well. It was very personal and interesting. It did not feel as if we were rushed or “ just another tourist “. They genuinely seemed to care about us enjoying the experience and getting to know us. As an animal lover, I often leave some establishments with a heavy heart, because the animals are not treated as I would have hoped. Here, I left with my heart full. There is no question in my mind that they are doing this job, because they absolutely love it and are passionate about it. If I come back to Playa, I would definitely put this on my list of things to do again.

What an amazing experience! This was my first time ever on horseback but Lisa and the team made my friend and I very comfortable from the minute we arrived. All the horses are rescues and have been rehabilitated here at Rancho Baaxal over years. The jungle trails were amazing and there was lots of wildlife to see. 5 Stars from me. Highly recommend.

What an amazing ride. We turned up as a couple and rode with another couple getting on really well. The horses are picked for you on your size and ability. All the horses are rescues but so well behaved and sure footed on the trails through the forest. Our guide Tim was lovely chatting throughout and telling us about the local habitat and Mayan culture. Refreshments were available on our ride along with photo opportunities.
Would recommend this activity to riders and non riders alike. They care so passionately about the wellbeing of their animals which is really nice.

My husband and I took this tour during a week-long stay in Tulum from Canada. Both of us agreed this was the highlight of our trip! The entrance to the property was not marked but we found our way fine with Google maps. We were greeted by Tim(our guide) who was very friendly and accommodating. We are experienced riders and have ridden many types of horses before. The horses here are gentle, responsive, and sure-footed. We felt, size-wise, that they were appropriate for us. The trails involved some slight inclines and rocks and we even had a large puddle to splash through after a bit of rain(and some small ones). We walked the trail to keep from slipping, and had no issues. Our guides(Tim and Trino) were very helpful and entertaining and took good care of the horses. We could tell they really love what they do. Tim gave a very informative and thorough tour of the property which included some Mayan history. Trino spoke only Spanish and we didn’t understand enough of the language to chat much. Despite that, he was very helpful and friendly as well. We were out for over 1.5hrs, but the ride ended too quickly for us. Back at the starting point, we met the lovely owner Lisa who gave us her time sharing her story and answering questions. She is putting her heart and soul into caring for these animals and it shows. (The horses are all rescues as well as most of the dogs on the property). There is no option for on-site payment, and cell reception is spotty there, so paying online beforehand is the way to go. Or bring cash. (We tipped our guides in cash)
We wish the absolute best for these awesome folks and hope to return again!!
