Our trip to Nemocon and Zipaquirá was honestly one of the highlights of our week in Bogota. Esteban, our driver, was stalwart and dependable with a great sense of humor, and Ana Maria, our tour guide, was an utter delight - knowledgeable, kind, and a joy to spend the day with. And what a day!

The trip from our hotel in Bogota to Nemocon, the first stop, was over an hour, but Ana Maria made sure to fill us in on the history of the everyday neighborhoods around us and made sure we were comfortable on the way to our destination. Nemocon itself was fascinating - we first were walked through a museum focused on the natural and cultural history of the region, then taken down into the mines themselves, which might as well be another world! Next, after the drive to Zipaquirá, we stopped for lunch (which was both huge and delicious) and then made our way to the Cathedral of Salt. The cathedral really is an experience not to be missed - though they aren’t kidding about the need for comfortable shoes, as it’s humongous! Finally, we saw some of Zipaquirá itself, including the plaza that, as Ana Maria explained, was one of the most important locations in the story of Colombian independence.

All told, it was an amazing experience that I’d recommend to just about anyone!
