We loved our guide who respected the coral reef while leading us around and pointing out a nurse shark, conch shells and schools of rainbow colored fish!

Great experience for first time snorkelers. There were only three in our group so we had great instruction. I would recommend.

We took the 4pm snorkeling adventure in May. While the ad said 1-2 hours, it was only 1 hour and only included 1 reef. Lot's of bait & switch here in MX. Our guide Mario was Mr Grumpy. Saw plenty of fish, a lobster and a turtle.

When we arrived, we were told that the tour guide was going to be "10-20 minutes late due to the late arrival of a previous client". He ended up arriving 30 minutes after our scheduled start time - which would have been just a mere inconvenience if he had not proceeded to end the tour exactly on time, effectively short changing us half an hour of what should have been about 90 minutes snorkelling.

What's more, our guide Mario was rude from the moment we met him, grunting in response to statements like "hi, we have a booking for 2pm", snapping at another customer when they asked a question, and being generally stand-offish, grumpy, and just plain mean the whole time, making what should have been a joyful, exciting trip one where we felt like we were walking on eggshells.

Puerto Morelos snorkeling is beautiful and I highly recommend it, BUT
1. Don't do it with this company
2. Put on sunscreen an hour before you arrive (they didn't tell us this until we had already arrived instead of including it in the booking email)
3. For the love of God somebody give Mario a new job, he seems to really hate this one.

I booked this tour based on a local recommendation and reviews, hoping we’d get Mario as a guide. When we arrived, I was so excited to discover Mario would in fact be our guide. He’s a bit of a local legend. However, our experience did not go as expected. (read on for details)

Things got off right. However, I did notice a lack of hand signals and the occasional head counting I am accustomed to from prior tours and that I customarily use when doing any Watersports with others. (Ie thumbs up letting the guide know everyone is ok, etc). There were only 7 of us so I thought ok…maybe it’s just easier to keep track of smaller groups. But no. With multiple tours in the water, there were 4 different occasions where I would have lost my group had my friend not brought her own mask completely different from the sea of others. On each of those occasions I was faaaaaar away from my group and had to high tail crawl stroke my way to them. (Which is a lot of work in a life vest!!!) This wasn’t so bad. I take some responsibility for it because I didn’t want to be too close to the others. A few of the people in our group were inconsiderate swimmers and after getting kicked or punched a few times by them, I was over it and pointedly kept distance between them.

Here’s where the real problem lay:

My friend has been snorkeling before, but isn’t a super strong swimmer. Don’t get me wrong. She can swim, she’s just not an athlete. At one point we hit a moderate current and she fell behind. I don’t even think Mario noticed. There was easily 200 feet between she and the rest of the group. She wasn’t moving. I was half way between she and the group. Concerned, I swam closer to her and asked if she was ok. She informed me that she wasn’t able to breathe through her mask and was out of breath. I corrected her snorkeling form to fix the one issue and told her to remain floating while I fetched and alerted Mario.

I swam to Mario as quickly as possible against the current and on reaching him, explained what was going on. Rather than expressing concern, he responded with annoyance. “I offered her a mask. What do you want me to do?!?”. I admit. I was a little taken aback by the response. True, tourists can be stupid and disrespectful but that is not what was happening here. She just needed to catch her breath and catch up to the group. At that point, I suggested that she is a grown woman and if she truly can’t keep up, she could go sit in the boat but either way, he needed to attend to her. Mario seemed angered and annoyed by the request. Again, I was surprised by this because I heard such wonderful things about him. Apparently he is amazing and knowledgeable but in our experience is lacking compassion and patience. Thankfully my friend is very easy going and did not take great offense to the attitude she was given for being the slowest member of our group. However, she was accused of kicking a reef (she did not, as she was overly worried about doing so and kept her flippers out of the water, floating in a lie back position until Mario arrived to assist her and threatened to force her into the boat if she took her mask off again (because with the mask off she could not clearly see the reef, which would endanger it). My friend endured all of this because all she really needed at that point was to catch up with the group. Once she did, she remained with the group and was fine for the duration of the snorkel.

If you are not fit, in good physical condition (myself and the rest of the participants were all fit) and a strong swimmer, pick another tour.

We spent a total of two hours in the water. We did see a plethora of colorful fish and quite the variety of them. It was overall a gorgeous snorkel but I wouldn’t use this service again with anyone not youthful, in top shape, or a strong swimmer.

Mario was a bit impatient. When we 1st left the boat the group took off rather fast and the current held me back some and I lost my breath trying to keep up. When I finally reached the group Mario didn't seem to understand I couldn't breath. I was told to keep up or go back to the boat. When I did finally catch my breath and was with the group Mario was pointing out numerous fish and even an eel under the coral. There were lots of different fish and some pretty coral but most of the coral was green or dull. There was a few brighter purples.

Christopher was a great tour guide, friendly, helpful, he gave us lots of information about the reef, and was good at answering all questions. The snorkelling was great, saw lots of beautiful fish, some of the more unusual ones were baracuda and eels and squid. I also liked how Christopher and Marko helped us on and off the boat (which at times was tricky), and were very attentive to everyone's needs. Highly recommended.
