Even though we had been to the Vatican on our first trip to Rome 15 years ago, we wanted to go back: the art collection in the museums is mind-blowing, and being in the Sistine Chapel is a unique experience. We were worried about the logistics, though. We were reading a lot of negative things about crowds and disorganized tours.

We ended up booking a 5:30-7:30 pm tour with The Roman Guy (aka The Tour Guy), and we're glad we did. We were part of the museum's last wave of tourists for the day (as far as we could tell -- the staff seemed to be closing up behind us). It was still crowded, but there was room to maneuver.

Our guide did a great job with both giving context on the art we were seeing, and leading us through the various layers of check-in and the crowded rooms. We'd book with The Roman Guy again.

The group coordinator was very late. She had 7 groups of 20 each waiting to be assigned to a tour guide. We started almost an hour late. Our guide was knowledgeable but was talking and walking very fast to get us through before closing. Very disappointing! We had 2 min in Sistine Chapel which was supposed to be the highlight.

Able to print tickets as WiFi and or Data Signals was intermittent at best

We were very excited about our visit to the Vatican museums and arrived at the meeting point in good time. We were divided into groups with different tour guides assigned. The girls who were responsibe for group allocations were very nice and friendly. They didn't give us the tickets or group stickers, but we assumed we'll get these once our tour guide arrives. After the other groups proceeded with the tour we were told that our guide is running a little late (which happens). She (Marcia) eventually arrived about 15-20 minutes late and then rushed everybody to the entrance. At this point we were still not given the tickets. Our guide started giving tickets out but did not know who belonged to the group, and as a consequence almost left us stranded without tickets just before the entrance to the Vatican. We almost had to argue with her to get our tickets. She eventually gave us the tickets and we were able to go in, after an unnecessarily stressful experience. The tour was okay, albeit quite rushed due to starting 20 minutes later. We managed to see all the highlights, including spending a decent amount of time in the Sistine chapel.

Overall, our experience was average, hence 3 stars. The guide being late is something that can happen in a busy city, but the fact that we were effectively ignored by the tour organisers and left without entrance tickets or tour stickers was suboptimal. It seems that other groups had a realy good experience and we were unlucky, but there were things that could have been better organised.

I had a unforgettably bad experience. What made is worse is that I emailed the company and responded to their email for review and NO one responded to me. This says alot about the company. Re; the individual who led my tour-2/3 of the group did not think that the tour was remotely worth it. We all agreed that the guide was not informed, and when i finally asked him if he could explain the symbolism of the dove and bow he said that he did not know! How could he not know two iconic symbols like that? The idea that you will have a semi private tour at night is also crap-the place over flowed with tours and unfortunately the security could not keep babies from screaming and locals laughing while in the chapel. Our guide also talked with us-I thought it was to be silence. I found more information listening to the other tour than from the guy leading our tour.

We chose a night tour of the Museums and Sistine Chapel thinking the crowds would be light. We were wrong! It was packed with tours. Ours was small--only 12 people, so we had a more personal experience. You are literally rushed through the Museums. Security guards hustle you along, even if your guide wants to answer questions and give details of what is on the walls. Stairs everywhere--felt like I was climbing to the pearly gates. Never thought we'd make it to the Chapel and when we did, I have to say I was underwhelmed. Crowded little room, dim lighting (nite time tour added to the dimness) and stiff neck from looking up! You can't skip seeing it. Just be prepared. And the exiting process? Longer than the entrance process. One time--never again.

It was less crowded in the evening. The views at night were still great. We saw an Army band playing and our tour guide Fabia was so knowledgeable about the Vatican and Sistine chapel. I’d follow her anywhere! Must do and see while in Rome.
