Grasse. . . World perfums capitale
In the middle ages, trade in hides and skins develops in Grasse. This activity generating a strong smell, manufacturers perfume their production of gloves, bags and belts from the Renaissance to meet a fashion now for Italy and the entourage of Queen Catherine de Medici.
Grasse microclimate allows to grow on-site of flowers in delicate fragrances such as rose, jasmine, Daffodil, carnation, orange blossom and violet. Grasse and its surroundings are then covered with fields of flowers and, in 1614, the King recognizes the new corporation of the 'Glovers perfumers. Circa 1750 appears the process of enfleurage cold that allows to extract the most delicate flowers such as jasmine or the Tuberose scented principle.
Modern perfumery techniques are invented and developed in Grasse. Mythical perfumes such as water wild of Dior or mythical N ° 5 Chanel originate there: for more than 200 years, Grasse is the world capital of perfume.
