This was the worst Hop on Hop Off bus tour I have ever taken.
Driver couldn’t work out the stop numbers and always got them wrong, the route which on the brochure went via the Funicular wasn’t actually the route taken by the bus, no explanation given as to why not. Journey generally wasn’t interesting.
The commentary system was very hard to hear and not really fully in sync with the journey.

The gentleman collecting vouchers recommended that we get off at the first stop in Bergen and take the funicular up the mountain early as it would be very crowded later in the day. We took his advice, had a great time and saw all the mobs of people coming in as we were leaving. He was so right!
Unfortunately, the cruise line we are traveling with was selling tickets for the same bus and they were cheaper than Viator. But we had already paid for ours so we will just live with it.

We were told that with our mobile vouchers, we had to go to the cruise terminal in order to exchange our voucher for the entry ticket. It was a long walk to go to the terminal and afterwards the driver said we could have boarded at any stop 🥴. There was no signage for any of the City Sightseeing bus stops. How is one supposed to know where to wait for the bus?? Finally, the audio tapes were not totally in sync with the bus’ location. Sometimes the guide pointed out a monument or building and we could not see it. Also, sometimes the tape just stopped in mid sentence.

The cost of a single ticket is 475 NOK, that makes it close 45 USD. One full round journey is only 55 mins. Of course you can take multiple trips and the ticket is valid for 24 hours. But when I finished my other stuff and went back for a second round across the city, I realized that the service stops at 4pm. So the bus timings are only from 10am -4pm. I haven’t seen a Hop On Off charge so much and operate only for 6 hours in a day! What prevents them from operating for long when the days are so long in the summers. I found it to be a total scam! It’s just not worth 45USD. And they show you a very small part of the city anyway.

They say timing is everything: we walked the 200 yards from our cruise ship to stop one, redeemed our voucher and got on the bus which happened to be at the stop. We had a very informative trip round the bus route and eventually got off at the stop to the funicular. I understand why some previous reviews talk about waiting a long time for the bus if it is at the opposite side of the route when you are waiting to board but In our case there were absolutely no issues and the commentary on the bus was very good. Most of the attractions in Bergen are walkable but as stated the commentary was very good which you would miss.

While Bergen is a bit pricey for food and entertainment, the Hop On Hop Off bus is very overpriced for what you get. Two tickets were $89. Most of the stops were underwhelming. Recorded tour narrative was a bit off cue and difficult to understand. Would recommend a guided walking tour with an actual guide.

We had done the hop on/hop off buses in cities like Budapest, Vienna and Berlin in previous years, so we decided to do the same in Bergen. We bought tickets on 13th May. It was 15.44 pm and as we could not use the ticket on the 14th, because of other commitments, my wife asked the lady selling tickets - a pleasant lady called Taziana - if there was time to do the full circuit that afternoon. She assured us that we could, so we bought 3 tickets for 1187 nok - not an inconsiderable sum, even in a very expensive city like Bergen. We boarded the bus, but at around 16.25 the bus reached the terminus. We intended to stay on, but at this point the driver told everyone to get off - that was it for the day, he said. We weren’t even half way round! Rather than it being hop on/off, it was more a case of HOP ON/F*** OFF! We had been ripped off royally by the ticket seller; this does not reflect on the integrity of the bus company; nor does it reflect well on the city of Bergen. We could have hired a knowledgeable taxi driver for that sort of money who could have given us a personal tour - and with money to spare.

I decided to pass a little bit of time getting my bearings on my first day in Bergen. I caught one of the buses by the Fish Market. I sat upstairs and had my little headphones. Unfortunately the system where I was sat didn’t play the English commentary very clearly. When I found English version it was very crackly and couldn’t really tell what was being said. That was the only downfall of my tour.

Beware, there is a bus driver who is selling bus tickets for cash on the bus refusing to take credit cards. He is fiddling the company. Only buy tickets from uniformed employees in Bergen
