Matt was amazing from the get go. From being so kind as to offer a discounted rate and giving me rides to and from Camelback, to entertaining me with his wealth of knowledge about the surrounding ecology and phoenix landmarks and then giving me a mini tour of Scottsdale Old Town on our way back on his own time, Matt made this hike such an amazing experience despite the scorching heat!
I felt safe going with him especially since I was on my own and am not a hiker. He came ready with more than enough gear, water and snack for the hike and was so kind to carry my gigantic water bottle for me.
He also took a bunch of awesome pics on the way so I can cherish this memory forever.
I highly recommend going on a hike with him especially if you're new to the area, not a super confident hiker, or simply to learn about the surrounding area, ecology and geology throughout your journey. Plus - he's super chill, kind, friendly and laidback. He'll make it a hike to remember for you.

We had a great hike with Curtis. This was a challenging hike so it was nice to benefit from his advice and experience. Along the way, Curtis shared information about the mountains, the history and he shared some interesting stories along the way!

Liz and I had a TIME! This hike took it all out of me but the peak was worth it! Thank you to my wonderful guide, Liz. She was amazing. I felt safe and she was totally thoughtful of what I needed at every turn! Also, a great personal photographer. Book Liz!

Matt took me up and down Camelback Mountain and pointed out so many fascinating things along the way - including the secret cave! Breathtaking views and lots of fun. Matt provided everything I needed including snacks, cold drinks and great company. An experience of a lifetime for any non Arizonians! Highly recommended.

Curtis was great! Shared lots of information about the area: plantlife, animal life, history. Very personable guy. Although I consider myself an able hiker, he introduced me to some views I never would have experienced on my own.

What can I say… Mad Desert Trekking are just incredible. I’m in Phoenix for work, so have been spending most of my time cooped up indoors, shivering under the air conditioning. I couldn’t wait to explore the natural landscape and experience the ‘real’ Phoenix. I booked a sunset hike and my guide, Liz, was phenomenal - so warm and friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about the desert. I learned so much on the tour but it never felt forced or like a lesson; it was like hiking with a friend, even though we’d never met before. As a lone female traveller, this was amazing!
The trail was manageable and easy, and the views we had of the sunset were stunning. Liz was a very intuitive guide, always making sure I was comfortable with the pace. She was also well stocked with water and trail snacks. I loved the experience so much that I couldn’t wait to do it again!
As soon as I had time in my schedule, I booked the morning hike on Camelback Mountain. Matt, the owner of Mad Desert Trekking, talked me through the booking process and provided great advice on the suitability of the trek. He even gave me a returning customer discount and made me feel like a VIP!
My guide on Camelback was Curtis and, again, he was a very likeable, friendly and knowledgeable guide. I felt safe and supported all along this much more challenging trail and had lots of fun along the way. It was great knowing that Curtis had a huge amount of kit, including medical supplies, should we need them (we didn’t!). Curtis offered technical advice, local knowledge and was an all-round good guy. He always made sure I was safe, comfortable and having fun. He even took action shots, which he sent to me after the hike!
I hope to be back in Phoenix next year and am already planning to book further tours with Mad Desert Trekking. This company puts you in touch with the landscape and also offers real human connections. I couldn’t have asked for more from my experiences - they exceeded my expectations and then some!
