During this 2H walking tour, you will learn how People of African ancestry first arrived at New Orleans in 1719, within a year of the establishment of the city, having been forcibly removed from the Senegambia region of West Africa. Roughly five thousand Africans survived the Middle Passage en route to French Louisiana during the 1720s, followed in the 1780s by a similarly sized group brought by the Spanish from the Benin and Congo regions. Enslaved Africans of the colonial era cleared forests, raised crops, and built the city infrastructure.
In this visit You will see how African culture persisted in New Orleans, influencing everything from food to music to religion to architecture.
Your tour guide will take you to the famous Square Congo, now part of Armstrong Park on the edge of the French Quarter in the Faubourg Treme where hundreds of African slaves and laborers congregated to trade goods, play music, dance, and socialize.

He had a great time with Meka. She perfectly balanced the seriousness and complexity of history with easy conversation and good rapport. She definitely had a plan and taught us new things, but also engaged with us and did not seem bothered by the ways we derailed her. This was an excellent tour with loads of walking, but also thoughtful touches like photos and bathroom stops.

We had a great time on this fascinating walking tour. Our guide Mika was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, engaging and friendly. Mika imparted her extensive knowledge in an entertaining and relaxed manner whilst being totally respectful of the subject matter. We enjoyed the conversation and company of the other 2 participants and highly recommend this tour.

We have participated in other tours in the NOLA area in the past and enjoyed them all. This one though is a very important tour for any visitor to the Quarter to have a better understanding of the African American culture in the area and the influence that the various members of that culture have had on the city since the first enslaved people were brought to NOLA. We learned a lot about the culture and how it has endured through the centuries. This tour has caused me to dig deeper into the culture and history. Thank you!

Louis Armstrong Park: seeing evidence of offerings under an old tree brought the past and the present together in a way that I would have never seen has I not seen had I not gone on this tour.

So, I had the same tour guide, for this tour, as I did when I took The Garden District Tour. Right away, the tour guide tried to extort more money out of me. He said I was rude, because he wasn’t happy with the tip I gave him for the previous tour. And, he threatened to not run the tour at all. You see, no one else had bought a ticket for this group tour either. And, so the guide was going to cancel it without refund, because he was trying to use blackmail to get a bigger tip. News flack! While it is a good idea to tip when you travel, tips are still suppose to be optional. And, you should never feel pressured to tip more than you are comfortable with (like this tour guide was trying to pressure me to do). Skip the problems from an incompetent guide and just go read the plaques in Congo Square yourself. It will be more accurate information.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and told a unique perspective on New Orleans history. The city has such a rich tapestry of history that was told beautifully.

Keynin was my tour guide and he was more than knowledgable about new orleans (born and raised, local musician) shows and tells you the story not popularly told. He did a great job and at the end of the tour if you can beg him to, ask him to show you the scariest story.
Enjoy and thank me later.
