Pompeii was not the only city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius back in 79 A.D.. A few miles away, right on the coastline, there was another city: Herculaneum. That one town, just like Pompeii, was at the same time both destroyed and preserved by the disaster. Pyroclastic flows covered Herculaneum with a literal mountain of scalding ashes, burying the remains of the ancient city under 80 feet of volcanic materials.
Today, almost 2000 years later, the charm Herculaneum had is still intact. The town was a residential area for the upper class: smaller but richer than Pompeii was. Traces of the affluence of the ancient Herculaneum are still visibile in the original style and in the elegant decorations of the private houses.
Herculaneum differentiates itself from Pompeii also when it comes to the state of the preservation: the two cities were destroyed by the same eruption but the effects on them were not alike.

My wife and I and two friends took this two hour guided tour round Herculaneum with our guide Marco who brought the whole site to life with his incredible knowledge of the site,the events which lead up to the disaster and the way the inhabitants lead their lives. A never to be forgotten experience.

My wife and I booked this tour before we started our holiday. A couple of days before the tour was scheduled Francesco sent me a WhatsApp informing me we were the only people on the tour and the tour would be cancelled as no other bookings had been made. He offered us the opportunity of a private tour for an additional cost. At this point I did look at other options, but decided to stick with this tour as it had the best reviews. I'm glad I did for two reasons. Firstly, the day before the tour Francesco informed us there had been another booking and it would go ahead at the original price. Secondly, Umberto, our tour guide, was brilliant. He was a very friendly, enthusiastic and informative guide, pointing out lots of interesting archeological features we probably would have missed on our own. In the two hours we covered a lot of Herculaneum and Umberto gave us some tips on other points of interest which were well worth seeing too.
All in all, a fantastic small group tour (just four in total) which was well worth the money.

We had toured Pompeii on a prior visit to Naples so we wanted to try something new. We loved this tour and we’re so glad we took it! Our guide Ciro was very knowledgeable and explained the history very well. We were a very small group so it was easy and comfortable to ask questions. And the remains of this site are so different from Pompeii it was really interesting to see roofs and wood that had survived at this spot and not at Pompeii. Even if you tour Pompeii, I would highly recommend this tour in addition to that tour. Or even this tour on its own. It’s smaller with less crowds than Pompeii but just as stunning.

We were a small group of 7 people (2 couples and us with our 9 year old) and had an amazing time. Our guide Francesco couldn’t have been better. He was knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful, also once the tour had ended.
The two hours flew by and our daughter and us enjoyed it very much and learnt a lot.
I highly recommend this experience and hope to repeat it again in the near future.

Francesco was very knowledgeable guide and knew his history. Gave a very thorough presentation and even helped us get the right train station to get back to Sorrento! The Ercolano station wasn’t a return stop.

We booked this tour for 4 of us travelling together. We arrived a bit early but because we’d already been given contact details for our guide, Antonella, we weee able to contact her and start the tour earlier. She was an excellent guide, so enthusiastic about the subject and really great at communicating all the amazing history of Herculaneum to us. Being in such a small group made a refreshing change from the bigger tours we’d been on in Rome. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend both this tour and Antonella. Also, the cafe next to the coach car park was surprisingly good!

This was excellent. The guide was nice and wasnt over whelming. She gave just enough information and kept a good steady pace which was great because it was hot.
There is no shade so I would take a hat.
I heard from other tourists that they went to Pompeii and it wasn't as nice as Herculaneum.
Highly recommend this place.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable tour with Marco, an experienced tour guide from this region. His knowledge of Herculaneum and its history made the tour around the site significantly more interesting than had we visited on our own. For us, there is no point visiting such an incredible historical site without a guide who can take you back in time & put context to what you are seeing. We would definitely recommend these guides to show you around.

With our French-speaking guide from Welink, Rosaria, we benefited from really useful explanations to understand life in Herculaneum, to admire the most beautiful views. A good visit and a good memory. We also visited the larger Pompeii. The 2 sites complemented each other.

This was a great experience we where a bit late due to traffic in the area but they accommodate us. The tour guide was great and knowledgeable and showed us attractions of the city great tour would recommend touring with them.
