Explore the 1,000-year history of Oxford Castle and Prison. Step back in time with our costumed guided tours and see fascinating stories come to life. Hear the great tales of Empress Matilda, the fate of Mary Blandy and step inside our padded jail cell.
Find gorgeous views atop of St. Georges' Tower and then descend into the atmospheric crypt of St. Georges’ Chapel. Here you can touch the stones where Oxford University was rumoured to begin and stand in the birthplace of Geofrey of Monmouths’ King Arthur. Wander the austere confines of the prisons’ D-Wing and learn about our youngest inmates.
After your guided tour, you can explore the prison cells at your own leisure and dress up like a prisoner in our exhibition space. Head outside and climb the mound, the remains of our motte and bailey castle.

Very good and amusing tour. Enthusiastic lady as guide. You get a geniune feel of an old prison! Lots of steps, so not suitable for disabled people. 8

We came pretty late on a Sunday and were greeted with smiles and pleasant attitudes!
Anne gave us an accidental private tour (We were the only ones who signed up)
It was super informational and professional! And Anne knew all the answers to any questions we had! Not to mention she worked over her shift just for us, What a total gem!
We had a wonderful time and will definitely be coming back/recommending!

Learnt something I did not know before so tour was educational. It was just about the right length of time (about an hour) and Ellie was excellent with her narrative- an actress in the making. The young bits (looks like 4 and 7) were really hooked on the stories

I loved it.I liked our funny tour guide Ella.
The history around the place is amazing as well, only downside will be that the place is smaller than expected.
