We really love taking food making tours whenever we travel, and a chocolate making activity seemed perfect.

The tour starts at a local restaurant where the tour operator picks you up and takes you to the workshop, which is only a 5 minute drive away. This is because there's little to no street parking at the location. I will say, we were warned as Americans to be on the lookout in case someone tried to kidnap us, so getting into a car with strangers seemed a little odd, but I assure you, it's perfectly safe!

At the workshop we got to first learn about the history of cacao, talk to the operator and the chocolatier, and ask questions. This is a hands on excursion which is a lot of fun.

We first drank chocolate drink, which was so rich and authentic. We got to roast cacao beans, and then take melted chocolate and make our own large dark chocolate rounds for melting later. We also got to mix up and temper chocolate, form it into bars, and then put in whatever toppings we wanted. The chocolatier was so great to learn from and had so many amazing samples and things to try.

After that, we sampled even more different gradients of chocolate in bitterness and sweetness, and we had fresh treats waiting for us.

This was a great experience for the whole family. I initially pushed back on my wife for a chocolate making experience because I'm not a fan of sweets. But after this experience, I now find that I've developed a sweet tooth.

Would happily do again!

We were collected on time by Axel who was also to be our interpreter for this brilliant experience.

Driven the short distance to an artisanal chocolate workshop where we had a lesson in how chocolate is produced from the seed being planted to the harvest and the regions growing it, then we tempered the chocolate and made a personal bar of chocolate to our own flavour and then wrapping it.

The workshop was all hands on and at an easy pace. We were the only two on it so it was very personal. We tried numerous different chocolates while there from their artisanal range with different percentages of cocoa and each one was explained in detail to us. We left after two hours thoroughly happy.

The excursion is probably not the usual kind of thing people think about doing when visiting Cancun, but you really should…..
