1. Hagia Sophia Mosque
Like the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Haghia Sophia – the Church of the Holy Wisdom – has been a thauma (wonder) and a theama (must-see) since its inception. Following its completion in ad537, Justinian’s biographer Procopius (c500–c565) breathlessly described it as “wonderful in its beauty yet altogether terrifying by the apparent precariousness of its composition. The building fulfilled a unique function within Byzantine society, and its decoration needed to project Orthodox belief while emphasising its position at the heart of the empire.
2. Basilica Cistern
The Basilica Cistern, is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The cistern, located 150 metres (490 ft) southwest of the Hagia Sophia on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu, was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The bases of two columns In the northwest corner of the cistern reuse blocks carved with the face of Medusa.
3. Walls of Constantinople (Istanbul City Walls)
The most historically intriguing settlement on the Bosphorus, Rumelihisarı's splendid 15th-century Ottoman fortress guards the narrowest point of the straits, together with the older Anadoluhisarı across the water. The ruin is open to the public, and concerts are regularly held in summer.
4. Column of Constantine
Another structure that speaks a lot of the rich history of Istanbul is the Column of Constantine. This 35-meter-long column was erected in 330 CE by the empire Constantine in honor of Constantinople’s declaration as to the seat of the Roman Empire. The majestic column decorates the streets of Istanbul and is made from porphyry blocks.
5. Hippodrome
The 4th Century Hippodrome is another beautiful ancient structure that once entertained Constantinople. This was once the center of sports like chariot races, protests, celebrations, and festivals. Enjoy the surviving large monuments from all over the empire that decorate this magnificent Hippodrome.
6. Valens Aqueduct (Bozdogan Kemeri)
Our first visit will be a magnificent piece of Roman architecture, the Valens Aqueduct Bridge. Approximately 920m long, this aqueduct bridge was built from large ashlar blocks in 345-373 CE to bring water from Thrace to Constantinople. Finished during the reign of Valens 1, the aqueduct still functioned as late as the 18th century.
7. Grand Bazaar
Over the centuries, Istanbul’s Grand bazaar has acquired a justly legendary reputation as one of the most famous shopping emporiums in the world. Everything the heart desires can be found in this ancient, hectic maze. With more than 3,000 shops in 61 covered streets, the Grand Bazaar is like a medieval shopping mall, and one of the most animated and colorful parts of the city
