My husband doesn't like driving on mountainous roads, so I decided to book a couple tours. I found Proper Cretan Guide online before our trip and booked three private all day tours. The first was an Imbros Gorge transfer, the second was an Elafonisi Beach transfer and the third was called Explore Pure Chania: Authentic Villages of Crete. Our guide, Apostolis, was extremely knowledgeable about places to go in Crete and the history of Crete. We really enjoyed talking to him as we learned so much. He was flexible and considered our interests which made our days enjoyable. On the first tour, after Imbros Gorge, he took us to a beach that we requested and then offered to take us to an unofficial WW2 Museum, which my husband found fascinating. Once again on the second tour, the conversation was easy and informative. After the beach, he recommended one of his favorite restaurants and it was excellent. With each tour, we got to know our guide, Apostolis, more and more. It felt like we had a friend in Crete. If we had questions we could ask him and that proved very helpful a couple of times. On the third tour, we saw stunning views, learned about making olive oil, both in the old traditional way and the modern factory way. We saw a 3,000 year old olive tree that we would have never heard of on our own. We found that our days with Apostolis added so much to our experience that we added a fourth private tour with him to see the Akrotiri Peninsula. When we left Crete, we had a deeper understanding of Crete and felt more connected to the island thanks to these tours.
