The good:
- The initial whatsapp coordination was efficient and easy.
- The shuttle arrived on time.
- The hot air balloon ride itself was fun, though the views were... lacklustre.
The rest:
The pick-up time was moved up to 00:00, after which it took two hours to pick up everyone. After two hours, we were changed out of the larger, modern bus into a smaller, uncomfortable minivan without enough seating.
Consequently, we spent the next four hours sitting apart from each other, squished shoulder to shoulder. One person in our party had to sit in the middle front seat, next to the driver, with no seat belt.
In total, the "three-hour" trip took six hours and a backache.
The hot air balloon ride itself was fun, though a bit gimmicky.
After that, we were given "breakfast." Calling it "subpar" would be praising it. Unless you're into unhygienic polony on white bread with tea. (Coffee costs extra and consists of half a spoonful of Nescafe instant.)
Then we were dragged to an "onyx workshop," where salespeople stalked us for ten minutes like something out of a Weeping Angels horror movie.
Going into the ruins/pools costs an extra €30, and you pretty much have to pay it, or you'll be sitting on the street for three hours. This really should have been included in the price, especially given how desperately they wanted us to buy the ticket from them rather than at the gate.
Food inside the complex is bland and expensive and what shade there is, is occupied by smokers.
The iconic pools have pretty much completely dried up except for a handful that are filled by pumped water.
The ruins were nice, but we had already seen similar ruins that didn't require a six hour drive.
Cleopatra's Pool looks nice, but swimming in it costs extra and involves becoming part of the tourist attraction.
This is eventually followed by lunch, which was edible but essentially canteen food. Drinks are extra (and pricey).
We managed to get swapped to the emptier Russian-speaking bus for most of the return trip, which made it more bearable but it still took 5 hours to get home.
Not to mention, about 2 hours from the destination, they tried to transfer all the people from our area from the emptier bus to the already-full bus we had left. When we asked where to sit (since there were about 4 seats too few), we were repeatedly told to just "get in" and that it was "out of their control." Which was nice to know.
They did eventually organise a third bus for the last hour.
From an enjoyment point of view, it's about on par with a very long, extremely budget economy flight, and all the movies are pay to watch.
Regardless of the cost, the 1 hour balloon ride was definitely not worth an uncomfortable day that started at midnight and only concluded at 6pm.
If I could go lower than 1*, I would.
