Pompeii was magical. So much to see - you would need a few days. The cast figures were amazing. Some of the houses absolutely beautiful. We had a great time there despite constant rain.
However the trip there was disappointing. Three hours is long enough. But then they added an extra hour driving through the dreary streets of Naples with views only of the ugliest city I’ve ever seen. That wasn’t in the itinerary so why did they do it?

Well organised, friendly staff, ran to time. Coach air conditioned which was fabulous given the 38 degrees outside! We did the self guided tour without lunch and had around 3.5 hours to go round Pompeii ruins. Didn’t cover everybody much but it was plenty for us including a stop at the cafe inside the ruins (quite small but adequate). The only reasons haven’t given 5 stars are a) it’s a long day and there are no facilities in the coach to charge phones which these days would be very helpful b) I don’t think the Naples tour is necessary. Naples is not a particularly pretty city and you can get good views of the bay from the coach. Overall though I would recommend.

The trip was great, the guide Eduardo was superb, his knowledge and charisma couldn't be better, he kept everyone on the bus amused with with his asides and general " mateyness" which made a great day

Long day trip from Rome to Pompeii. Unfortunately, we were stuck in severe traffic leaving Rome which meant it took us 5 hours to get to Pompeii with only a brief stop at a Naples service station. As a result, we missed our scenic view stopover in Naples and were compensated with a free croissant and tiny coffee for breakfast. The guide on the bus was okay, however he seemed to just be reading off of a script and the information was quite basic. We organised an audioguide and our own lunch at Pompeii which worked out much cheaper than going with the pre booked lunch/guide option which some of our group had already purchased. We saw lots in the 3 hours we had at Pompeii, and were ready to travel back to Rome at the end. Overall, I would just save my money and organise my own train trip to Pompeii as the traffic was our enemy in this tour.

The company Gray line were a fantastic company to travel with. Only four stars because of a motorway accident and two hour delay in getting to our destination but that was out of the tour company's control....The guide couldn't be more helpful and spoke to all the passengers individually on the way back to make sure everyone knew how to get back to their hotel after being dropped off.

I would definitely recommend this tour! The guides on the bus were funny and engaging. You didn't need to try to navigate the train system to get to and from Pompeii. You could just relax both ways and have the driver and guide get you to where you were going. The only thing to know is that you can't eat on the bus. Best to have breakfast before boarding and to pack snacks if you can for when you stop. Otherwise, the trip was absolutely priceless. They helped you to navigate through the area around the archaeological site and directed you to audio devices if you chose to purchase them. You had 4 hours to "go back in time" in the amazing space that is Pompeii. Truly amazing!

The listing that we purchased our tickets through specifically states that customers will have 8 hours in Pompeii with 2 hours of bus ride on either end, totaling 12 hours. For starters, Pompeii is a 3 hour drive from Rome (if you don't stop even for a bathroom break - which this tour did). Secondly, the tour company took everyone on the bus on a tour of Naples, even though only one couple (2 people of about 30 on the whole bus) had bought that tour. The tour of Naples consisted of driving through narrow winding roads in a very large bus with a tour guide who gave us no real information of any cultural or historical value. This took an additional 2.5 hours. We boarded the tour bus at 7:30am and did not arrive at Pompeii until 2pm. We left Pompeii to return to Rome at 5pm. (You can do the math.)
We have one family member with mobility impairments who was looking forward to having the time to explore the ruins of Pompeii during this once-in-a-lifetime trip. The map of the archeological park showed a cafe inside, which the tour operator did not inform us was closed. Since we had not yet eaten a full meal, we ended up having to rush through the Pompeii archeological park (due to one family member's medical condition requiring food).

We especially chose this tour because of the extended unstructured time in Pompeii that it offered. We did not get that.

Additionally, when we tried to explain to the tour operator how disappointed we were, he was condescending and unapologetic (basic customer service no-nos).

I did not have time to visit Naples, but Pompeii was recommended by my wife. What to do? The day trip from Rome solved the problem. My guide was polite, generous, professional, and knowledgeable.

Glad we read the reviews before going.
We knew about the 1 hour bus tour of Naples, & glad we’ve now done it. We won’t be back, but fab day trip from Rome.
We did self guided tour of Pompei- saved £100, went at our own pace & learnt lots from the ap / reading signs.
