I am a well seasoned traveler, who is greatly interested in how cultures are formed. The religions and other ideologies form groups with common or shared belief systems. These systems over lap with others and this overlapping is often where conflicts occur. I always found this part of the world confusing. Ivo was able to share this rich culture and the understanding behind the past and recent conflicts. Mostar and Sarajevo were at the heart of the last conflict. Ivo really helped me to put many pieces in the puzzle together as he walked me through time. I highly recommend this tour.

Vidokrug created a great itinerary for its Sarajevo & Mostar Private Day Tour. Besam, my amazing tour guide, customized it for me. Despite my booking the tour late the night, Besam was both prompt and cheerful for our 6 am departure, As a result, the tour was pleasant from the start. Besam, whose English is perfect, conveyed a great deal of fascinating information about Bosnia-Herzegovina in a way that felt like conversation between a gracious host and a curious guest rather than a classroom lecture. In addition, h convinced me to climb to the top of a mosque in Mostar by persuading me that the view was worth my overcoming my fear of heights and reassuring me that he would help me do it. He was right and I had that fabulous experience because of him. As required, a local guide conducted the tour of Sarajevo, which included the Tunnel of Hope, the 1984 Winter Olympic sites, and the bridge where the Archduke's assassination sparked WWI. I found his passionate description of the siege both enlightening and emotionally compelling. After a delicious dinner of a traditional Bosnian dish, Besam and I had a good discussion about Sarajevo, while he expertly drove the curvy route home. When he dropped me off at my hotel, I felt like I was saying good-bye to a friend after a long and very rewarding day, I plan to take Vidokrug's two-day tour of Albania with Besam as my guide later this summer.

I probably run the risk of boring the reader, but the actual experience was longer than this review! After having been in Slovenia-Croatia for over 2 weeks, going place to place in an organized tour, we went on a private day tour, 7:30am pick up, July 2, 2018, to Sarajevo as this was not included in the organized itinerary. Denis, from Vidokrug Tours/Taxi Dubrovnik, arrived beforwe appointed time in a clean car painted w/ all the ads of the company's tours. Heas very knowledgeable on the tourist spots and the area's history starting from the Ottomans, division after the Yugoslav wars, etc. which we have heard from other guides, but good to hear again. Surprising for a 22-year old driver, actually who could not be pushed to comment about enmity among previous Yugoslav countries. His reply: everybody fought for what they were told or what they believed and every story was different. We had a super quick stop at Ston & its walls, oyster, snaps, the works. He also prepared us for the border crossing. As some of you may now know, the crossing is time consuming, to say the least, especially if there's a lot of traffic. From Dubrovnik, one has to exit Croatia, enter Bosnia-Herzegovina, exit BiH, enter Croatia again, exit Croatia, enter BiH at Neum before one's finally driving to destination... (History will tell you why). We had been to Mostar, the Kravice falls and Denis mentioned them on our way. A Croatian-certified guide cannot do a tour guide in another country, BiH - Sarajevo, so Vidokrug Tours (Taxi Dubrovnik), arranged for a Sarajevo local guide to do their part for 4 hours when we were supposed to be there. Appointed time with local Sarajevo guide was 2pm but we were late for 15 minutes with the traffic, so we met him at a place he and Denis agreed. The local guide was brusque, no welcome to Sarajevo and all the pleasantries and only gave us his name, when we gave ours. He didn't even ask us where we're from! Denis left and we went in the Sarajevo guide's private car w/ a young couple. I asked the local guide the day's program right off the bat and he said he was taking us to the Tunnel 1st & then 2 more places if he had time. I was piqued that he didn't mention a Sarajevo city tour, but planned to ask after the Tunnel visit, w/c was included in tour description. Lo and behold, just the intro to the Tunnel, made outside the Tunnel in the heat of the sun was over 20 min. The Sarajevo guide also made us pay for the Tunnel entrance w/c was included in the description and once inside, launched into what was inflicted on the Bosnians. After almost 2 hours & we were still in the Tunnel area, I asked the other couple when we were going to Sarajevo for the town tour. The couple said this was the "Siege Tour". I approached the guide & told him, we didn't book for this tour but he blamed the Dubrovnik group for booking us in the wrong tour. We asked to be driven back to Sarajevo to see it at least! He continued w/ his Siege narrative and finally drove us out of there. We were in Sarajevo at 5pm w/ only one hour left.as this guide insisted he was not booked for a city or walking tour. He dropped us at the Old Town where our guide was to pick us up at 6pm. We managed a walking tour on our own & Denis was there. When the Sarajevo guide came & Denis said, he couldn't pay him for the wrong tour (in their language of course), the Sarajevo guide said, he needed to be paid in full for the 2+hours we were with him - it wasn't his company's fault, etc., etc. What we suspected was that when the tour was booked 24 hours before (companies book at the last minute, in case there are cancellations as tour buyers can cancel 24 hours before), the Sarajevo company may have already had the pair for the Siege tour. Or Denis' company may have assumed that the 4-hours should rightfully show Sarajevo as this is a Sarajevo tour! We could be wrong, but the local guide's attitude made us think. Either to avoid getting another guide or they only had this guide on a Sunday, they put us with the Siege pair and you know the rest of the story.... When we drove back to Dubrovnik, it started to rain. Thankfully, Denis was careful, though not slow. Still, the drive was long. We didn't even stop for sit-down dinner, just grabbed sandwiches, arrived safely in Dubrovnik close to 11pm. Denis & we had almost a 16-hour day trip w/ only a glimpse of Sarajevo!...Morale of the experience; if you want to take this trip (as obviously the bus is much longer and one can't stop when one wants to), make sure the details of the Sarajevo tour are spelled out the day before. The local tour provider specified in the Viator confirmation, had the local ph and email contacts. We did not verify as our experiences with Viator have been good. Also the European sim card that we had, which worked perfectly well in Slo and Croatia, didn't work in BiH and we couldn't contact Vidokrug and Denis earlier in the tour. Also have some local money - when we paid the Tunnel entrance (payable in BiH currency and euros, we were not issued a receipt because we paid in euros. BUT overall, the drive with stretches of beautiful countryside, old aqueducts, quaint houses, occasional buildings & infrastructure ravaged by war, green mountains and meandering river that accompanied you almost all the way were sights to behold and think of. We wanted to see a Sarajevo that was seat of the 1984 Olympics and even w/ a long siege in the past, is thriving presently and looking to the future inspite the corruption & beaurocracy in a government run by 3 rotating presidents. We could've done the tour ourselves w/ Denis driving us to all the spots provided in a well-written guide book that we had. Vidokrug responded to our complaint on the Sarajevo tour & credited us a portion of the tour price. They also offered to give us private transfer to the airport. We asked to have the credit given to our driver, who felt bad, though no fault of his own, who probably lost valuable time but took us & delivered us safely back more than 16 hours after we started.
