Although I booked a group tour, I had a luxury of having a private tour in the end. It was interesting to learn the history and culture at the Zubara Fort and nearby archaeological site. The guide was knowledgeable and attentive.

We booked this a few days before the date and reached out beforehand with the number listed for the tour coordinator. They asked for a time and place for pick-up and we provided it. We even confirmed the next morning and they were an absolute no-show. Every person we contacted would send us to a different person after that to “get in touch with the driver”. Eventually radio silence. Do not book unless you are willing to risk wasting several hours and have a back-up plan. I understand that with the World Cup going on things might have been hectic, and if they needed to cancel on us we would have accepted that, but then tell us in advance and don’t string us along the whole time, tell us you will pick us up and then not show up.

This was a mess. I don't blame the people working, but Qatari government for hiring people who have never done this. The 4-hour tour took 7 hours, 6 of WHICH I was in a car/bus picking up people, and waiting on drivers to actually get locations of the people to pick up. We sat for 10 minutes at one corner while the driver called back and forth to even learn who to pick up next. When we left, the guide didn't know the tour was supposed to go to Al Khor. We took a quick 15 minute stop by some old boats as we drove past it. We had 40-45 minutes at Zubarah. They were lost on the way back. Then took an hour to find a gas station to get gas for the bus. Instead of returning around 1pm as expected, I didn't get back until 4pm. I had to cancel afternoon plans. But again: one hour on actual locations and SIX HOURS in a bus. Zubarah is an hour away. It was not worth loosing a whole day.

My tour was supposed to be 2pm. The. Tour guide enquired if I could change to earlier timing and it was the best decision (departed at 11am) because the drive is long and if we’re to go at 2pm, it will be dark by the time I got back… =)
Went to Al Khor fish market, saw tiny fishes by the boat! Spent 15 mins around there taking photos and looking aroun. Then went for mangrove seaside and took some really beautiful beach photos and admire the sea. Spent 20-30mins there.
Finally main event was the long drive (probably an hour) to Al Zubarah fort!!! The long drive is pretty long and there’s just gonna be dessert around for most parts. Though, journey was worth it as it’s one of the best places to visit and reading the information panels paint a picture of how the place is. Awesome place to take photos!!!
Reached back hotel at about 3.30pm (Doha starts to get dark at about 5pm-ish)
