Depart from Bordeaux
Visit Dordogne & the Perigord – the most beautiful region in France!
Discover 12th century fortified castles and charming medieval fortified villages scattered along the lazy weaving river.
From Bordeaux to Dordogne & the Perigord; we’ll take the autoroute - its a 2 hour+ ride.
On our way we’ll drive through Les Eyzies-de-Tayac. This is where they found the first Cro Magnon remains!
Les Eyzies is also home to the National Prehistory museum.
Sarlat- la-Caneda is the capital of Dordogne – a lovely medieval city with cobble stone streets and lots of 11th century buildings. This would be a good place to stop for lunch, and a little shopping if you like.
We’ll visit Domme, a fortified hilltop village with magnificent panoramic views, and La Roque-Gageac charming medieval village built down close to the river. Then we'll drive up to the Castelnaud-La Chapelle Castle, followed by the Marqueyssac Gardens, and the Beynac Castle, before returning to Bordeaux.

The 4 of us are seniors and we were glad we inquired in advance about the type of car the guide had. We ended up agreeing to pay the guide twice the fee so he could rent a van. The van was fine, however, the three in our group sitting in the second and 3rd row of the van could not hear any commentary and there was no accommodation to amplify his commentary. Also the van did not have a stool to make it easier to enter and exit the van.
What commentary that was heard was disappointing. It was largely what any of us could have read off a map, like the name of a castle. We chose not to pay extra and enter the caves which our guide explained would typically have to be paid for and reserved in advance.

The prehistoric caves in Lascaux and particularly Ruffinac were outstanding sites to visit. Our guide Christian is one of best we've ever toured with. He is kind, knowledgeable, and went out of his way to make our experience perfect.

Great day trip from Bordeaux to see the beautiful Dordogne valley. Long drive out, but scenic and well worth the visit once there!

The excursion was pricey, but worth it. The quaint little towns along the Dordogne are incredibly picturesque and are the epitome of beautiful French countryside. Christian, our guide/driver is very knowledgeable, and he couldn’t have been nicer. Definitely a highlight of our 11-day stay in the Bordeaux area.
