Hierapolis ("Holy City") was an ancient  Greco-Roamn city in Phrygia located on hot springs in South West Anatolia. Its ruins are adjacent to maodern Pamukkale.

Hierapolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hot springs there have been used as a spa since the 2nd Century B.C.E. and people came to soothe their ailments with many of them retiring or dying here.

Some of the highlights; the large necropolis is filled with sarcophagi, the main street with the gates and latrines, cathedral, the theatre and St. Philips tomb. The hot springs causing cascades which are called the Cotton Castle. Because of the distance we have to leave Antalya early and return late but its worth it to experince this wonderful place.

The tour guide Bekir was the best. He was funny and very easy going. Simay was also very helpful. The trip was well planned and we took a cart for all instead of walking which made it easy for us not to walk in the sun. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to do this tour.

This was a very long day but a comfortable air conditioned minibus, a friendly, informative and enthusiastic guide and plenty of chances to snooze on the minibus made the travel time (3.5 hours each way) go by reasonably quickly.
We went to all of the sites described, the theatre is amazingly well preserved and the pool was lovely although had a fair amount of algae swimming around in it. The Pemulkkae pools are mostly not filled but they were still pretty to look at and we could dip our feet.
The lunch was great, lots of choice in a very fancy looking venue with amazing desert and grounds.
Massive thanks to our guide who seemed to know everything about everything. As our group kept well to time we had a spare 30 minutes for either a wine tasting or fabric factory - which was a nice touch. Thank you!
