An experience in the territories of Albanian language and culture in Sicily

In the province of Palermo there are 5 towns of Albanian origin and culture that boast a large community of more than 50,000 people. The word Arbëreshë defines the Albanian ethno-linguistic minority historically settled in southern and insular Italy. Coming from Albania and the many Albanian communities of Morea and Ciamuria, the communities settled in Italy between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries, after the death of the Albanian national hero Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg. Also, the progressive conquest of Albania and of all the territories of the Byzantine Empire by the Turks-Ottomans, lead them to emigrate. Their culture is determined by characteristic elements, which are found in language, religion, customs, traditions, iconographic art, gastronomy, jealously preserved, because of the awareness of belonging to a specific ethnic group.

If you think you've had good cannoli, but you've never been to Piana degli Albanesi, then you haven't yet had the best cannoli in the world. This is a fantastic day trip, and should be on everyone's "to-do" list in Palermo. The cycling is not challenging if you are in relatively good shape, and if you are in just decent shape it is still doable. The bikes have an electric assist, the countryside is beautiful, the ride out of Palermo itself is thrilling, and the downhill portions of the afternoon ride are better than any amusement park ever thought about being. Sergio is amazing. His love for people, for Sicily, for hospitality...all just shines through his smile. As my kids said, "He just kept getting cooler and cooler the more we talked with him!" He kept us safe and helped us out every step of the way. A kinder and more generous person you will not find.
