Andrew, with his brilliant storytelling was awesome. His ability to crack jokes every 5 mins kept us entertained for the whole day.And hats off to his knowledge about any topic related to Croatia or neighbouring countries. I wish I had taken his Instagram handle 😊

We booked this tour because we wanted a small group and even though there were not enough guests to fill a minibus this company honoured our booking.
So we were collected by Tomi our guide and he took us into Montenegro.
Tomi was a wonderful guide. He took us round Persat, Kotor and Budva. He told us about the country and towns. He took us to places in the towns we may have missed if we’d have been on our own.
Tomi even bought us local pastries to try. So thank you Tomi.
We had a wonderful time and got a real flavour of Montenegro.

We stumbled across Andrea during our first day in Dubrovnik Old Town and she booked us for a day trip to Montenegro on the next day. The driver/guide Ivo was really nice and knowledgeable as he brought us to local places which fewer people know of, at least places that tourists like us won’t find out on our own. The grill restaurant he brought us for lunch was cheap and delicious. He even made a detour to the peak in Dubrovnik for a sunset viewing when it had already passed his working hours, as the tour was supposed to end at 6pm. The trip was amazing and we enjoyed the nature and mountains in Montenegro very much.

This was a wonderful tour. Not only was the tour guide extremely fun and personable, he was very knowledgeable of Montenegro. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Dubrovnik looking to take a fun day trip!

I have never had to write a bad review on trip advisor before, but I feel like I need to warn off other travellers. I would not recommend this day trip to Montenegro run by Smiley Tours. I'm sure you could get a much better experience for a similar cost by using a different company.

Unfortunately the attitude of our tour guide Marco was bizarre at best and at times, scary. He gave off an angry and aloof vibe. Upon pick up we were immediately made to feel ill of ease as he told us we'd been waiting on the wrong side of the road, meaning he's got stuck in traffic. We were just waiting at the agreed pick up spot, and of course would have waited on the other side of the road if he'd suggested it.

The drive to Montenegro was fine, boarder crossing a bit of a wait but of course not Smiley tours fault. My companion and I quickly realised that we needed to provide the entertainment for this day trip. Any silence resulted in an angry, grumpy, huffy tour guide, so we felt like we had to entertain him all day. However any progress we made when trying to make friends with him often resulted in us being put down, and at times insulted. Both of us felt like crying in the toilets by lunch time. I can't describe how hard it was to try and appease him and the constant energy we needed to get through the day.

We went to Kotor, but not to Budva as the tour description described. We had a lot of rain, which again wasn't the Smiley tours fault but meant we couldn't climb to the fortress or really see too much. From what we did see, Montenegro is beautiful, they have great seafood available and the old town of Kotor is worth a visit. We also had a fun visit to the Cats Museum!

Overall, I would recommend a trip to Montenegro (the drive and boarder crossings are nowhere near as long and tricky as when we went to Mostar, so easy to do in a day) but I WOULD NOT advise using this tour operator.

We booked the tour on the seafront at Mlini. We were picked up by our driver Marco (amazing character) at 0850. Only 3 couples on our tour, 4 English, 2 Canadians, in a comfortable 9 seater vehicle. DONT forget passport as needed for customs at borders!! A little wait at border but not too bad. Stopped to have a look around/coffee/shopping break in Herceg Novi. Very nice place. Followed coastal road with amazing views down to the old town of Kotor with the St. John's Fortress. Party split 3 to go to fortress and 3 to explore old town. Make sure you are reasonable fit and have sensible footwear on as it is quite a climb approx 45 minutes steep footpath/steps, but very worthwhile when you get to the top. We all opted for Marco to take us to a Restuarant called Konoba, Spil. Approx 1 hour from Kotor but wellworth the ride. Marco organised a mixed meal to share, fish platter, lamb, veal even 2 vegetarian dishes, salad, potatoes and bread - great food and all for €100 in total including drinks! A really quaint Restuarant and village, and lovely welcoming owner. Stopped to view Budva at night and were also taken to an old fortress to see again the view at night and the stars - a different experience. Just managed to catch a ferry boat to shorten the journey back. Arrived back at Mlini at 2330. Fabulous value for money at 375 kuna or €50 per person - made extra special by Marco.

This was a really disappointing day trip for my husband and I. It's important to stress that this is a self-guided tour. Maria gave us useful and interesting info on the coach but didnt come with us to Our Lady on the Rocks, Kotor or Budva. I think people could get a lot more out of this if they did a bit of research beforehand to understand what they are seeing, unfortunately we didnt know about this and so felt abandoned as we were left for a hours in each location.
Kotor was lovely, very pretty but the 'beach' at Budva was awful; jam packed with locals and tourists. We were looking forward to finding a quiet, or at least not so commercial area to do some swimming, instead we had to pay EUR12.50 to get out of the sun. What was most upsetting was that on the drive back to Dubrovnik, there were quite a few areas were one could see locals swimming and with more then enough space for 14 of us to join for a few hours.

There was a long wait at the boarder, but obviously this isn't preventable by Smiley.

It would also be good for the tour bus to have a stock of bottled water, even for sale, as we were on it ALL day.
Also important to note - Montenegro takes Euros, not Kuna. So if you're visiting from Croatia, make sure you take some with you!
