We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to spend a day exploring a serene and sacred spot in the Andes mountains, while learning about a precious ecosystem and pre-Colombian indigenous culture. Alejandra is an outstanding guide - friendly, informative, and clearly passionate about her work - and she partnered very well with Andres, our nature interpreter.

Our day began with breakfast at La Calera, including the local variety of arepas and a hearty bowl of caldo de costilla. We then stopped at an enormous abandoned concrete factory, near a reputed ghost town. We climbed deeper into the mountains, and entered Chingaza National Park. After a video introducing us to the park, we hiked to the astonishing Lagunas de Buitrago, a site sacred to the indigenous Muisca people. Alejandra and Andres describe the flora and fauna of the rare high tropical ecosystem, páramo, in detail. We ate a delicious and filling lunch at a viewpoint above the lagoons, and then continued our hike to the shore, surrounded by towering frailejones (plants unique to this ecosystem). The elusive Andean bear also made a fleeting appearance, hurrying across our path.

Our final stop was at Palacio, the site of an abandoned mine and the highest point (altitude) on our tour. The mountain views were astonishing, including a rare Colombian white-tailed deer.

We very much appreciated Alejandra’s focus on conservation, sustainability, and support of local businesses. We would definitely tour with Zebra Fisgona again, and will recommend them to our friends who travel to Colombia.

It is unbelievable that only at a two hour drive you can see an walk in a Paramo Ecosystem that it is almost unique in the world.

It is an all day walk (9.1 km; roundish 6 mi) and you have to be prepared (boots, coat and waterproof clothes).

Surely you will be sore the next day but the unique vegetation and the possibility to see fears and bears makes it totally worth it.

La Zebra girls were amazing and the quality/price is really goods, will definitively repeat!!
