There are various means of getting from Hanoi to Sapa. The most popular way to travel from Hanoi to Sapa is to either choose between an overnight sleeper train or choosing the express bus option. In the past, most everyone recommended the train because the bus ride was long and miserable. But that all changed in 2014 when Vietnam officially opened to the Hanoi – Lao Cai Expressway. This is a brand new highway that goes directly from Hanoi to Lao Cai (the town at the bottom of Sapa’s mountain – the same place the train ends up).

The driver arrived punctually. Directions for the meeting point were clear. The bus was reasonably clean. We stopped twice for bathroom and food breaks. The roads were very hilly, but the driver navigated them expertly. We arrived on time and safely.

The bus has 4 armchair seats, but the company sells more than 4 tickets so if you are the last to be picked and the 5th person you will end up with a normal seat. Nothing luxury about your trip!

Positive: overall good communication, and on-time pick up and drop off.
To be improved: quality and condition of the truck. The trucks we were in were pretty used up, with pieces of the chair and ventilation system broken off. Also, in the back row, not very comfortable, especially when somebody in front reclines their seat directly into your lap.

The bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and the bus from Ninh Binh to Sapa were very comfortable. We booked the bus through bcfamilytour.com. The buses were very new and modern, comfortable, and the staff were very friendly. Our travel experts supported us at any time.

Comfortable ride was a little cool, had a few stops along the 4.30 to 5 hour ride. Note stops need 3,000VND for toilets and own water to take.

Our family was very fortunate to choose this bus. This is the best bus service in Asia and Europe. We have traveled for over a year and experienced hundreds of thousands of bus trips, but this is the cheapest bus trip in Asia with very timely and thoughtful support services. Pretty uncomfortable, but will get you where you need to be for a decent price. If you’re tall, there won’t be much legroom and you can look forward to a pretty uncomfortable 7 hours. The driver takes about 2hrs picking people up and then it’s a 5hr drive- great if you’re on a budget but otherwise would recommend a private- we did it on the way back and was much better.
The tour operator says they stop twice but that’s a lie- they only stop once. The driver doesn’t know where you need to be dropped off so be prepared to show them on a map!

First time in a sleeper bus. I was a bit nervous about feeling claustrophobic or getting car sick but it was fine. We made 2 quikstops a long the way. Just enough time to use the restroom and grab a quick snack. Was able to doze off for a bit. Good for a long drive but nothing over 5 hours . My husband is 6'2 and it was a bit crammed for him. But overall it was good, they made it very easy for us from pick up to drop off
