Water Puppetry is a traditional art form with distinctive culture identity of Vietnam. It came into existence, developed and diversified over a thousand years ago in the Red River Delta. Thanks to unique performances on the water, this puppetry art is famous and highly appreciated all over the world.

In early days, water puppetry showed the daily life of villagers such as farming, fishing, romance and children playing. Now, the topics of the plays are also picked from ancient legends, myths and historic stages.

Amazing experience for kids. Viator prebooking helped us get front rows.

There was a person waiting for us with tickets at the reception itself. We didn't even have to stand in line.

Excellent and out of the ordinary show. I thought it would be a tourist trap but the show is authentic and really amazing. The music performers and singers were outstanding.

I did not experience the skip the line because I still had to queue. The show was very entertaining.

Wonderful show and this company made it very easy to get the tickets. My group had 19. They even upgraded several of the seats.

The crowds in front of the entrance prove that such a visit is obligatory for every tourist. The stage in the hall has been replaced by a shallow pond, with a raised stage for the musicians on either side. The puppets move on and in the water, operated by players who stand invisibly behind a bamboo curtain. They manage to conjure up spectacular scenes, with gargoyle dragons and fireworks. The scenes depicted are about simple rural life and require no explanation. The traditional music and singing adds extra atmosphere. After the performance - about an hour - the bamboo curtain is pulled up behind the water stage and you can see the players standing in water up to their waists.

I really liked it, a lot!

VIP seats (first rows) were great - good visibility. We bought tickets on Tripadvisor.
Before the show there is an opportunity to rent an audio guide (whole show is in Vietnamese) - I would consider it (we didn’t have one). Or at least it is a good idea to read on the website of the theatre information about the show and the main characters. It helped to undestand the stories.

It was a very nice and unique show. Enjoy, have fun! :-)

Some my comments to it - I would think these are natural thing to do but apparentally unfortunately not:
- come in advance (at least 10-15 min.), don’t be late
- don’t come with a can of beer, it’s rude
- don’t eat or drink during the show
- wear something at least a little bit nice (not a top, short shorts and flip flops)
- don’t talk during the show, it’s rude
- don’t make videos during the show, the people behind you can’t see anything and it’s unpolite

We paid £54.00 for 4 tickets which is double if we had just gone straight to the theatre and booked them a total rip off as you can see the ticket clearly shows 200vnd and the price list at the box office was the same, I would rather give the money to the theatre than a rip off agent. The show itself was outstanding.
Highly recommended for all ages very visual and easy to understand great show which I have seen before a few years ago, took friends to watch the great experience

The water puppet show its self is excellent and well worth visiting when making a trip to Hanoi, so this is by no means a review of the show its self.

The skip the line tickets were more hassle than just buying one on the day.

We arrived about 30mins before the show started, and were asked to wait. The ticket agent seemed to have trouble finding the tickets and we actually ended up being some of the last to enter the theatre just as the show was starting.

If I’d have known this, I’d have saved a bit of money and just purchased the tickets on the day.

This also happened to a couple of others at the same time. I appreciate things go wrong but the whole idea of buying tickets in advance and paying a premium is to avoid situations like this.

The experience entering the show was flawless. The show was just ok. It is definitely a one and done experience. It is recommended for a traditional experience of Vietnam.

The show itself it’s 5 stars.
Through Viator you pay 10$ though I realized you can buy the ticket minutes before the show for under 5$.
Still worth it if you don’t want to wait in the line.
