Let an Edinburgh doctor take you on a deep and fascinating trip into our medical and surgical history!
On this three to four hour tour, we'll be circumnavigating the Old Town, visiting the sites and buildings where our medical history was forged, and learning how Edinburgh transformed from a sleepy outpost into a world-renowned powerhouse of medical training and research. We'll hear of student drudgery and drunkeness, of lightning-fast surgeons, and of the women who battled tirelessly to be the first to study medicine here. Not to mention scandals, feuds, and famous former Edinburgh medics such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Darwin, and the man who became Dr Frankenstein!

Our family took a trip to Edinburgh early May of this year (2024). We have been before, but we wanted a closer look at the rich surgical history of the city. A little about us so you know our perspective: I am an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and my husband is a cardiothoracic physician assistant, so we are very much entrenched in surgery and love learning about the surgical field. Our family is budding- we have a 15 month old darling baby girl and on this trip we didn’t want to be involved with a huge group, both for her sake and everyone else’s as we require frequent (and sometimes loud) stops 😂 I can say with a growing fondness that this tour was one of the highlights! Our guide, Moray, is a physician and you can tell he has a passion for medical history. He excitedly lead us around both the famous monuments and down the lesser trodden closes, enriching us in detail about the prominent figures and drama of the time. Dr. Moray came well prepared- he had notes he could reference, but usually did not need them as his presentation was practiced and engaging. He gave a unique and genuine perspective to the tour as he himself had attended classes in the very buildings we were learning about. For the tour we started at Hunter Square and ended up near the Old Royal Infirmary building. We had a pleasant stop in a notable cafe near the surgical museum. Along the way our little did need a few extra moments and Moray was patient and gracious.
I could not recommend our guide Moray and this tour enough. We will likely do it again on our next visit! If you are interested in more than what the museums have to offer, please consider this tour and guide!
