1. Roluos Temples
Rolous is a name for the local community in Bakong District, Siem Reap, Cambodia. Rolous is the name of a rainforest tree, it's a thorny tree. Now For Tourism, Rolous is the group of Angkor temples, it was the second largest capital city of Khmer Empire(805-905) A.D. It's adopted by many ruins but the major temples for tourists to visit and explore are Lolei Preah Ko and Bakong Temple. They are all fine and impressive!
2. Bakong
In 802 AD, the first king of Angkor Jayavarman II declared the sovereignty of Cambodia. After ups and downs, he established his capital at Hariharalaya. A few decades later, his successors constructed Bakong in stages as the first temple mountain of sandstone at Angkor. The inscription on its stele (classified K.826) says that in 881 King Indravarman I dedicated the temple to the god Shiva and consecrated its central religious image, a lingam whose name Sri Indresvara was a combination of the king's own and the suffix "-esvara" which stood for Shiva ("Iśvara"). According to George Coedès, the devarāja cult consisted in the idea of divine kingship as a legitimacy of royal power,but later authors stated that it doesn't necessarily involve the cult of physical persona of the ruler himself.
3. Preah Ko
Preah Ko means "The Sacred Bull" was the first temple to be built in the ancient and now defunct city of Hariharalaya (in the area that today is called Roluos), some 15 kilometers south-east of the main group of temples at Angkor, Cambodia. The temple was built under the Khmer King Indravarman I in 879 to honor members of the king's family, whom it places in relation with the Hindu deity Shiva. After the Khmer king Jayavarman II founded the Khmer Empire in 802 A.D. He finally established his capital at Hariharalaya, where he died. Indravarman I was the nephew of Jayavarman II. When he ascended to the throne, he ordered the construction first of Preah Ko, which was dedicated in 879, and later of the temple-mountain known as the Bakong. It is likely that this building program was made possible by the king's peaceful reign and his ability to draw income from the expanding Empire. A restoration of the towers took place in the early 1990s, financed by the German government.
4. Lolei
Lolei is the northernmost temple of the Roluos group of three late 9th century Hindu temples at Angkor, Cambodia, the other members of which are Preah Ko and the Bakong. Lolei was the last of the three temples to be built as part of the city of Hariharalaya that once flourished at Roluos, and in 893 the Khmer king Yasovarman I dedicated it to Shiva and to members of the royal family. The name "Lolei" is thought to be a modern corruption of the ancient name "Hariharalaya, which means "the city of Harihara." Once an island temple, Lolei was located on an island slightly north of center in the now dry Indratataka baray,construction of which had nearly been completed under Yasovarman's father and predecessor Indravarman I. Scholars believe that placing the temple on an island in the middle of a body of water served to identify it symbolically with Mount Meru, home of the gods, which in Hindu mythology is surrounded by the world oceans.
5. Banteay Samre
Banteay Samre temple is located on the east side of Yasorvarmantadak(water reservoir), built by King Suriyavarman II, dedicated to his family and friends. Banteay Samre is well preserved of its stone gigantic carvings and living harmony with the nature surrounding. It has a quiet and fresh atmosphere, it’s a Hindu temple in the Angkor Wat Style. Banteay Samre means “The Citadel of Samre ''. Banteay Samré was excellently restored by Maurice Glaize from 1936 until 1944. The design of its single ogival tower is immediately recognizable as Angkor Wat style along with other temples in the region such as Thommanon and Chau Say Tevoda. Due to this temple's similarity to some monuments of north-east Thailand, it has the appearance of a compact Phimai. While there are no inscriptions describing its foundation, it seems likely to have been built by a high official of the court during the reign of King Suryavarman II.
6. Pre Rup
Pre Rup is an enormous brick stone temple built as the state temple of The King Rajendravarman II in 961 A.D, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a symbol of Mount Meru in Hindu mythology. Pre means “Turn” Rup means “Body”, so Pre Rup means turning off the body temple. The temple's name is a comparatively modern one meaning "turn the body". This reflects the common belief among Cambodians that funerals were conducted at the temple, with the ashes of the body being ritually rotated in different directions as the service progressed. It’s highly recommended!
7. Prasat Kravan
Prasat Kravan is the massive brick temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, built by King Harshavarman I in 921. The site was cleaned from vegetation around 1930 by the Frenchmen Henri Marchal and Georges Trouvé. The temple is oriented to the east and surrounded by a small moat. Its exterior is striking for its classical lines and symmetry. The central and the south tower have superstructures which take advantage of false perspective by simple means of diminishing tiers. The sanctuary's interiors are remarkable for the large carvings depictions of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi that have been carved into the walls of reddish brick, connected by a vegetable compound. This type of sculptured artwork is rather common in Cham temples, but rare in known Khmer monuments.
8. Neak Pean
Neak Poan Temple is located in the center of Jayatadak lake, it’s surrounded by water. Neak Pean means “the entwined serpents". Neak Pean was originally designed for medical purposes (the ancients believed that going into these pools would balance the elements in the bather, thus curing disease); it is one of the many hospitals that Jayavarman VII built. It is based on the ancient Hindu belief of balance. Four connected pools represent Water, Earth, Fire and Wind. Each is connected to the central water source, the main tank, by a stone conduit "presided over by one of Four Great Animals (maha ajaneya pasu) namely Elephant, Bull, Horse, and Lion, corresponding to the north, east, south, and west quarters.
9. Preah Khan
Preah Khan is a sacred temple in the Angkor main park, built by King Jayavarman VII in year 1191, dedicated to his father name Dharanindravarman II, who is represented in the central sanctuary by Lokesvara, The Savior God in the Mahayana Buddhism, who was much worshiped Jayavarman VII’s reign. During the middle period The stupa was erected in place for Lokesvara in the central sanctuary. It’s located in the north of Angkor Thom city, from the north gate to the west entrance of Prasat Preah Khan temple is about 800 meters. Preah Khan is well known for its beautiful scenery of the original ruins and it served as the University of Fine Art And Culture under the reign of King Jayavarman VII.
